Mk2 rs vs golf r

ive just sold my mk2 rs last week and bought a scirocco r, i had to get rid of the rs as it was making me paranoid owning it, it got to a stage where i would be kept up at night if i heard any noises outside, thinking people were trying to nick it !!!!

great car to drive and gets plenty of attention, most good, some bad,tbh the rs was a money pit as i got the mod bug and everything was costing 600/700 quid every time i looked on the laptop !!!!!

plus rs's have a drinking problem, the scirocco r is very easy to drive around town, often getting over 30 mpg, yet the rs used to struggle to get 25 mpg...as i said the rs had a drinking problem lol.

ive always been a ford man all my life, this is my first go in a vw hot hatch/coupe, and its very easy to live with as a daily driver, plus the new golf Rlook pretty shit hot imo :):) a more elegant package.

I came from a Fiesta ST-2 into my R, the standard ST vs the standard R is a lot more fun. The R masks its speed and  being so competent feels quite dead at legal speeds on the road, the ST by comparison is a little hooligan and begging you to rag it to death.

A few mods and the R starts to become more like the ST and the fun returns.

what do you consider as a "few mods" 😂

Exhaust res delete, DTUK pedal box and the Eibach springs made the car a lot better to drive and Imo more engaging.

I hear the res delete is pretty much the first thing to do. What about the otteinger spoiler or do people think its just to over priced?

tbh what did it for me with the scirocco R was the looks over the golf R, i like the shape of the scirocco better and they are more rare to see on the road.

the rs gets loads of looks honestly, but unless you have a garage with top notch security id go golf any day ( or scirocco ) especially living near a city.

i live in a small market town near cambridge and i had 2 cctv cameras installed obd port removed and a plate covering where the original one was plus a tracker fitted, but i still used to be kept awake at night with worry !!!!!!

oh im running 6 speed manual........cus im old school innit :):):)

I'll admit the scirroco r is a lovely looking car i see one regularly by me in white and it does stand out more than the golf

I've never had a gearbox problem on a DSG, MKV GTI > Mk6 golf R > Mk7 golf R, Over about 7 years of ownership.

better than any manual,

Ditto this.  9 years of DSG performance Golfs (Mk5 GTI , Mk6 GTI, Mk7 R) and not a wrong peep from the gearbox on any of them.

Hey everyone i know this is a golf r forum so obviously there's going to be a bit of bias but as the title suggests im torn between the two, the rs looks the part for me but the golf has the refinement and the speed. If i was to get the r i would get the dsg, how many cars have problems with the gearbox as I'm aware if anything goes wrong its a big bill

For me it was the Golf. The RS looks awesome but more suited to a 2nd car for me. For a daily I just love the stealth cars and the R does what it does very well.

I had a Mk2 RS for 4 years and have now had an R Estate for 1.  I agree with much of the above.

Handling close but I found the RS a little better at 80-90% effort.  The counter to that stiff suspension on the RS is that the R is so much better in normal driving conditions, i.e. most of the time.

In gear they're pretty close.  Until you change gear!  And then there is no doubt that the DSG makes the R a good deal quicker.  And with four wheel drive it's obviously quicker off the line.

The RS seats were brilliant but not height adjustable.  The rest of the interior is hands down in favour of the R.

I loved the look of the RS and got loads of mostly thumbs up attention but then it was new and, at the time, the current model.  If I had to park on the street or in public car parks I'd be very nervous about the RS.

Most of my journeys are commuting, so got around 29mpg in the RS and averaging around 30 in the R.

The RS had fantastic residuals.  From new I lost less than 7k in four years!

Summary: unless you want an occasional blaster that has a good 'feel factor' - but which is ultimately slower - and off street, ideally garage parking, I'd go with the R.   It's unquestionably a better all rounder but then I suspect you already know that!
