jonnyfR
Hi all, Ive had the car from new, almost a year now, and one thing i have noticed is the amount of stone chips it picks up. Its a Pure White 3dr R I dont necessarily hammer it over 100 down the motorway every day, nor do i ever really use gravel, rough, loose surface roads. I use the same routes i did in my previous white merc and and daytona RS3, both of which hardly had any chips after several years of usage. The Golf is peppered with them, every time i wash it theres more and more appearing and i cant help but think is it thin/ weak/ inferior paint? I even find one of two on the rear quarters and on i found one above the windscreen on the roof as well! I wonder if others are finding this at all? Also i use Sonax BSD sealant after every wash, which i know is nothing compared to some others but you would think there might be slight more stonechip protection with the like. Thoughts appreciated
PHILC
The roads are in such a poor state it's inevitable they pick up stone chips, mine has even got a slight dent from a stone on the bonnet. You say you don't use gravel, rough, loose surfaced roads but that's what most roads are like these days. When you travel around on a pushbike like I do, it's very obvious just how poor and crumbling they are. jonnyfR
tac1
VW paint does seem a bit 'iffy' compared to others. Not familiar with Sonax BSD but even the best quartz sealants (Nanolex, Gtechniq, Cquartz, Gyeon et al)will not protect against stone chips. UK roads are a tad trash! jonnyfR
Booth11
Paint Protection Film is an option. The vast majority of chemical paint protections - ceramic, glass, nano, polymer, organic sealants/waxes will not stop paint chips. It's a sad fact of the way are roads are and less robust water based automotive paints. jonnyfR
Nile
Keeping a safe distance might help as well. PPF as Ms Booth said might be a solution after a respray. Mainframe and jonnyfR 1
karan_s
Getting paint protection film on the front would help. Stone chips can be easily touched up, jonnyfR

This will be my a definite on my next car, for now it seems a front end respray will likely do before i hand back in a couple of years i think Booth11

Its funny how when you leave a gap in motorway traffic, you will always find someone has to pull into it! Nile and marshy 1
SmudgeR
I've done 900 miles in mine since I bought it and I have gone from no stone chips to about six already! My car was a VW head office car with only 1200 miles done in 8 months and judging by the condition of the front when I bought it, it will be having a very different life now! its also lapis blue which I understand is very soft. Has anyone got experience of smart repairs for stone chips?
