MPS4 v MPS Cup 2’s. Are the Cups worth extra £200 Outlay?

Recommended Posts

The time has come to replace my MPS4’s on my TD’s which have run well on the road and not too shabby on cooler trackdays.

For anyone running or have run Cup2’s are they worth the extra £200 over MPS4.

On 18 inch I tend to be lazy and not switch back to my normal Prets on Conti 6’s so run my TD’s on the road during the summer.

I know the Cups don’t perform as well in the wet but the question is are they really worth the £200 extra over PS4.??

There's a Youtube comparison using a Focus ST to test.  PS4 and PS4s were nearly identical wet; 1 second faster for PS4S on dry around track.

Cup2 was an added .5 second faster than PS4S on dry.  Also the turn in was sharper and Cup2 had oversteer compared to slight understeer on PS4S.

Here's the video link

I may be wrong, but I’m sure cup2 don’t come with as much tread from new vs the PS4 & PS4S

Tread depth looks marginally shallower.

I'd normally go the whole hog and fit Dunlop Direzza but not this time as they are very costly now.

Cup 2's I suspect are the in between a full blown Motorsport and road tyre.

Decisions decisions but it's a shame it's a £200 extra one !

Cup's just over 1.5 secs quicker in the dry than PS4....quite some margin but times to be taken subjectively on different platforms and 2WD v  4WD. Harder sidewalls are great for consistency and holding outer shoulder up lap after lap on the Cups. Hence cooler conditions and PS4 hold up better than a mid summer track event. That's what I've found. On the road the Ps4 are very good. I haven't tracked the Conti 6's but on the road they are impressive.

Ian I was really unimpressed with the PS4 on track, I found they went off after only a few laps and I destroyed the shoulders (Knockhill is brutal though).

I've had my Yoko AD08R on for a week now and they're superb on the road, can only imagine they'll be good on track too from the reviews, but i'll find out on Saturday! They sit between the PS4 and PSC2 in terms of price, about £130/corner, so maybe worth considering?

You'll really notice the difference between ps4 and cup on the track easily.

The ps4 is a great road tyre, but depending on your set up and experience may overheat and be ruined fairly quickly.

I've run cup's on my M3 and it was a world of difference on the road and track compared to the PS2's I had at the time.  There's more feedback, higher corner entry speeds, apex speed and exit. Your also able to feel the brakes more allowing better stopping and confidence.

Trouble is as soon as you upgrade the tyres, you'll notice the lack of body control and want to upgrade the brakes if you haven't already
