I went to VW and asked about the little silver retaining grommets and was shown a picture of the plate which did not show the grommets as a separate part so they said I couldn’t buy them without the plate. Is that the case as far as everyone knows.

I am going to refurb my plate as I’ve purchased the stick on R but didn’t want to remove the plate in case it wouldn’t stay on properly afterwards without new grommets.

I'm afraid they are correct. There is no part listed separately.

Surely the silver grommet can be reused. ?

If anyone takes their old plates off comment If the grommets remain in one piece.
Do the grommets come off with the plate or stay attached to the calliper.

I’ll let you know post lockdown

I wrapped my black silver, a pp replica if you will. The grommets on mine came off with thee backing plate. Just levered off with a screwdriver and knocked back in by hand.

There is nothing in the workshop manual about removal/replacement etc which Is unusual but they are shown in the front brake component break down.

The "clamping sleeve" should be re-usable I reckon, just an interference fit. I'd use a trim tool and lever around all edges evenly to remove.

There’s a few YouTube clips wherein exactly that method is used

These turned up today!

Nice.  Did you get them from the same eBay seller that I posted the links to?

Don't forget to put some cardboard or an old MF over the plates when you're tapping them in so you don't scratch them with the Mk1 striking device. 😃
