Haldex Service / Service Schedule

Hi All,

Can anyone recommend any advice on the below.

I have just listened to a voicemail from the dealer I purchased my used Golf R from. The message left stated because my car is now 3yr's old it is due a service and oil change of the 4WD system and if I would like to book it in with them call them back.

Im a little worried by the service schedule and history on my car, I want to ensure everything is done by VW standards so there is no quibble on warranty claims in the future if needed.

My service book only has 2 pages filed out (attached images), and on both occasions it doesn't look like much was done. The MyVW App lists an addition service event (attached image) on the 12/09/2019 which is not filled out in the book.

The 2nd proof of service page (event) is not listed on the MyVW app?

Either-way my car has only covered 14,500 miles. At what point is the Haldex system supposed to get serviced? is it 3yrs or a certain mileage which ever comes first? has my car overrun this now? I don't fully trust asking the dealers as they'd try sell you anything if they can.

Wondering if my car has missed any milestones.

The haldex servicing is 30k miles or 3 yearly by the book I believe. So yours is now due being 3 years old, make sure they know to clean the strainer/gauze/filter for the haldex oil as it gets blocked up and horrible.

at 3 years old you may also be due some plugs, brake fluid and gearbox oil?

The service regime should be in your owners manual I believe.

Haldex is every 3 years. The official service for the haldex system is an oil change, as the generation 5 haldex does not have a ‘serviceable’ filter like previous generations.

However, common knowledge that the gauze filter / screen on the haldex pump can get clogged causing the pump to fail prematurely. VW specialists will remove the pump and clean the filter, however VW won’t (although some have been known to).

I DIY’d the haldex service again a month after the official VW (oil change) haldex service. My pump was blocked.

If you are adamant at taking it to VW, ask them if they will clean the filter ON THE PUMP, don’t just say filter as they will say “there is no filter sir”

Spark plugs aren’t due until 60k miles (as is the air filter). DSG is due at 40k (mk7), 80k (mk7.5)

Thanks for the replies guys.

@slider09 I have just rang my local VW garage for a quote and they quoted £79 for the Haldex service. We didn't exchange what this entails though. So if I use them I need to ask or ensure they clean the Filter on the Pump, and maybe ask for photos to ensure its done?

£79 seemed pretty cheap for a dealer to be fair.

In addition to above and the photo, this thread has a lot of info and is a good source for anyone trying to explain the need to have the filter/gauze/strainer cleaned.

Brake fluid is due at 3 years.

They may try and tempt you with aircon service but if your aircon service is working fine, then it’s money wasted imo.

That is good price but likely doesn’t include cleaning the filter gauze  which may be extra, if indeed they are willing to do it, so you do need to ask the question as it’s not part of the standard VW haldex service.  I had mine done at one of the few VW dealerships that does offer that in addition to the usual haldex oil change, and it cost £109 iirc, but I think some charge around the £99 mark, including independents.

£79 is the standard price for the haldex service at VW. If you want to take it to VW, ask them if they will clean the haldex pump filter. Probably say no, however it’s worth checking.

Independent VW specialists charge around £100 for the service, however they do clean the filter. My local specialist charges £140, although they replace the pump seals and bolts which if going by the book you should do every time the pump is removed.

The 2nd service date (handwritten) in your service book looks wrong.  Says 2018 but surely should be 2019.  Book makes it look like two services in one year. The VW app Service Event has 2019 but different day. But surely that is the second service documented?  Mismatch on info though.   Book states 17/9/2018, app states 12/9/2019.  🙄

Thanks @Booth11

Wonder why they didn't mention the brake fluid is due also?

I know I did question this with VW but they just fobbed me off to the individual dealer to look in to.

I believe the book is correct but is missing the latest service by VW Stoke in September 2019. As the service that took place in Sept 2019 was done by VW stoke who I bought it off.

The extra one in 2018 on the 17th Sept I think just took place and was never logged on the VW electronic system as it wasn't due, maybe it was in for other work and someone added it to the book anyway, or more likely it was changing hands so it was done.

It bothers my OCD not having it correct and 100% know whats gone on.

I had mine done at 14000 by an independent, it looked like the other photo, you can tell when it needs it as the front wheels will start to squeak and sling at junctions, in the wet first you will notice it, when done you will remember it never did it

Can do nothing but good to be thus.  Well done Lug, piecing this jigsaw together.

Thankfully there is the Service book to help you here, not just the Official Electronic Record - which of course, only contains the keyboard entries made.  And nobody in a VW Service Dept. ever makes Keyboard errors.
Owners of more recent R’s will need to be extra vigilant at Service time (I’ll try with a Book too, but expect I’ll be refused).
