ACC doesn't remember 'close' setting

Hi All,

(re my 2018 Golf R (had it a couple of years now, bought nearly new & all generally great)

My ACC doesn't seem to remember setting as 'close' - I think!

I've trawled through & like others find, I prefer to run ACC with close distance setting - else what I find is that other drivers cut in to the gap to the car in front in the lane you are travelling - then, annoyingly, your car actually brakes (instead of lifting the throttle as you would without ACC on).

My issue is; next time I'm on a motorway journey & get the first instance of premature braking - I check the ACC setting, it shows as 'close' (as I've set to remember last setting). But I think it has gone back to standard really & is lying to me.

So I set it back to normal - then set it to close again - then it seems to behave with short distance before reacting (unless you get a complete dickhead of course cutting in with really no gap....)

Anyone else experienced this / what the issue is / know of a fix / advice?

My first post - so as per many others - your help & advice much appreciated.

Cheers!

Can you take a picture of the setting it's on? Also, what car mode are you using?

Come on, get up. Let me see your bruises.

mines stays where i set it always

Thanks tuono.

I've just had another play with mine (& I don't think it used to act like this - so I wish I'd taken pics before)

First pic preferred setting & second pic after ignition off changed to 'medium' (much like camelsac2002 states above)

Ours remembers the setting, it's something that annoys me about my car (non VW) because it always reverts to the longest distance which you could fit several cars into.

One tip is in the individual setting you can change the ACC to Sport and that closes the gap slightly more than normal and it also accelerates a bit more strongly too.  It's obviously the same if you put it into Race mode.

Mine also saves the closest setting (2017 R, pre-facelift). As mentioned above, you can set the aggressiveness of ACC acceleration / deceleration (I think the latter) in the 'Individual' Drive Mode. Mine is set to Sport, and I was expecting it to kick-down and fire me back up to the speed I set but it's more like 10% throttle instead of 5% in Normal, or 1% in Eco lol.

Though regardless of the distance set, like OP said, I find it rides the brakes too often for my liking when a car pulls in front. The short distance is still far enough away to allow other cars to slip in and push you back - I prefer lifting off throttle in advance of something I can see happening up ahead. I rarely use ACC because of that.

One thing I have started using is speed limiter :D - I actually find it better than ACC - set it to 85 70mph and just let your foot relax on the pedal. It's like "old school" cruise control and gives you a bit of relaxation while still letting you lift-off etc. Although it also rides the brakes on downhill bits, so I don't use it often either.

Nattering to a distant neighbour,  a serving Police Officer, who was Caught by a Camera Van on the A1 in N. Yorks.  Maybe 81 on the ACC is the only way to escape the Points and Fine after all.
I Told him about Waze and it’s facilities, but it was a bit of Stable Door and bolted horse....will be of help in the future tho 😀

Interesting! So blaming ACC is a valid counter to the ticket?
