Did you find a cure in the end?
-
Did anyone ever resolve the problems they were having here? I've now had mine balanced twice and can't shake a vibration....

Tyre Speed Ratings - help!
-
I already tried changing just the tyres on the 19s. The conti's that came out of the shoowroom were literally a joke and I couldn't even hear myself think with those on. I binned those after just 500 miles and got a set on MPS4S on there. Nice performance tyres, but the noise reduction was minimal tbh. But today I am a happy man! The 18s and some softer tyres that went on today have made a HUGE difference. It's still not right for sure, but the noise has reduced by around 40% I reckon, just based on the few miles I've tested today. I even had a Bluetooth phone conversation while driving where the person on the other end could actually hear me, which has never happened before. It was a lot of hassle to get to this point, but today was the 1st time I enjoyed driving the car, having owned it for 3 months. And I much prefer the look of it with the Cadiz too, so it's a double win. The slightly annoying side effect is that it's now quiet enough in the cabin for me to hear everything rattling! Both front doors seen to be fidgeting about and there is a rattle coming from the sensors up behind the rear view mirror. But the very fact that I can hear those proves that there has been a big improvement in the road noise for sure and I can work on the rattles another day.

Yeah I didn't want to risk it. Stuck with Y rated in the end and manged to find some reasonably quiet ones.

Hooray!!! We found one! Congratulations everyone, we have a happy post WLTP non DCC rider! There had to be one somewhere. Interesting that you got this info before purchase - was it from the VW dealer? So it might be a problem they are aware of? I'm hoping you are right here about the wheel size - because as we speak I'm watching my local tyre professionals put the rubber on the new 18inch wheels I 'm downgrading to on my car. I'm binning those horrible Prets and putting some Cadiz on. I think they look better anyway (controversial, I know) and if it takes some of the noise away then I might even stop moaning. For a bit anyway 😉
-
As above, you have DCC, so no problems for you! Lucky bugger.
-
Ok, as expected then for me. All the problems are on the non-DCC ones. Although everyone keeps saying DCC has noting to do with it, but there is a pattern for sure! Every single comment from people with DCC = no problem. Every single comment from people without DCC = noise problems. Still yet to find a non-DCC owner that is happy.....

DCC? Post WLTP?

Yep, you could take it further and have the doors and front footwell areas done too and I'm sure that would help even more. The noise is bad at the rear, but it is clearly coming from all 4 corners of the car, so only working on the boot isn't going to be the perfect answer. Anyone know of any good/cheap sound insulation fitting companies anywhere in/around Herts/Cambs? Maybe even Essex? Maybe I'll get a quote and sell one of my children to cover it.
-
Yep, I'm one step ahead of you! 1st thing I did to the car was lay some heavy acoustic sound deadening matt stuff over the top of the spare wheel and the floor of the boot. Made a bit of difference for sure. I think a full dynamatt install job would really help, but I'm not that rich.
-
Interesting to note that I've recently found 2 things that make a big difference: If I'm carrying a heavy load in the boot the noise is noticeably reduced. And if it's raining or the conditions are wet, that makes even more of a difference. Yesterday I actually had the perfect storm - a boot full of equipment while driving on a wet road and the car was MASSIVELY quieter. So much so that I could actually hear the exhaust noise kick in when I was overtaking on the dual carriageway (around 50-60MPH). I've never ever been able to hear that before in the 3000 miles I've put on the clock so far as it was always drowned out by the road noise. It's dry today and the boot is empty again, so the noise is back though Do those conditions provide any more clues as to what is going on with these new models? Also, does anyone have any experience changing the 4-motion settings via that ODB11 thing? I saw a setting for the 4WD on their site labelled 'low noise' which caught my eye (or ear!).
-
It came from the factory with the Contis on, but they were an absolute joke tbh. Switched to the PS4S almost straight away, which made it a touch better but still not right. Have now spent out again to downgrade to 18's, which are being fitted tomorrow, with some allegedly very quiet Dunlop tyres, in the hope that might make more of a difference. But I shouldn't have to be spending this much money. It's madness.
-
No, it would very much appear to be only those without DCC. Why I don't know, but that is the common thread from those with complaints.
-
I dream of a noise that low! That is less than half of what I get I'd say. You have DCC so I think that is helping you here. I still haven't found 1 non-DCC post-WLTP owner that is happy with theirs yet.

Cheers guys, I'm not concerned about price at all, or performance really, all I want to do is get rid of some of the horrific road/trye noise I suffer from, so just looking for the quietest tyre out there. All the half decent ones that win awards for noise levels seem to only be available with a W speed rating. I would happily trade of a bit of grip in the turn in, if it meant I could use the car without getting a flippin headache from the road/tyre noise. I still can't work out where the official VW suggested ratings are shown/listed - does anyone know?
