flipflops
I'm thinking about getting a cheap set of winter wheels and tyres for the r, I don't really care what they look like so can be steels, beaten up etc. They will need to clear the standard brakes which I guess is the biggest issue. What are people running and is there a standard go to cheap wheel option maybe off a lower spec golf, seat or Audi? Thanks,
jrw
You need 17s to clear the brakes and even then some don't fit depending on the offset and the style. I've got some 17s I got off here a couple of years ago. I dont put them on my R but put them on Octavia VRS which has same size brakes as the R (6month run where they put R brakes on for some reason!). Cant remember the model of them but they're VW wheels. Had them refurbed last year but never bothered putting them on last winter due to lockdown and not going anywhere. Now I live in Cornwall so probably won't need them this year either! flipflops

Trekkkie
I bought some refurbed VW Austin alloys via eBay, bit of a gamble but they were excellent, the tyre fitters thought they were brand new. I bought genuine VW wheels with the correct offset etc. as it made it simpler for the insurance ( go figure??) I looked into getting 17” wheels but surprisingly the tyres are more expensive than 18”, supply and demand I guess flipflops
NRW
A well used set of 18”Cadiz Alloys. From Here or maybe eeebay. A bit scratched, chipped, scraped ad White wormy. Some Black paint. Cadiz will give no issues with Bolts, Caps, fitment , offset etc. And you’ll likely get much of your outlay back when you come to change car. 😀 flipflops
Hawker1986
Im running 18" Cadiz Alloys too with Michelin Cross Climate + tyres as a winter option. I was very lucky to find someone here in the classifieds selling them not 10 miles from me. It was exactly what I wanted so didnt mind paying a premium but there will be cheaper options. As NRW says though I expect the Cadiz to pay me back when it comes time to sell. flipflops

Tiger's Wood
I was lucky enough to get a set of used 17" 'Dijon' alloys to use as winter wheels, that work great on the R (ie. They clear the brake discs). Picked them up years back from a German ebay shop that does secondhand rims, during one of the eBay rebate offers so they didn't cost me too much (£440 delivered for the set) and they were in pretty good condition, with only two needing minor refurbs. 17", so a much cheaper and wider choice of Winter tyres plus they are actual official VW Golf wheels so they match the car and I believe are actually recommended as Winter wheels by VW. They are powder coated instead of that crap diamond cut finish that VW and Audi seem to be so obsessed with (My Cadiz wheels are now suffering from bad white worming despite being well cared for) so they stand up to winter conditions much better and are easier and cheaper to get refurbed if they do get damaged. Quieter and more comforable ride too than my 18" Cadiz wheels but obviously with the higher profile and Winter tyres on them, handling suffers a bit in comparison, even in optimum conditions. Also good is that they make the car look even more like a regular Golf so good for not attracting attention. But I do like the look of them, in fact I prefer them to the Cadiz. flipflops
