The issue on the Octy was caused by odd wearing of the tyres, known as "sawtoothing" which led to a droning noise. The inner shoulders of the rear tyres became rough and caused a frequency to be generated and transmitted into the car. Google "briskoda sawtoothing" for more info. Revised tracking settings issued later by Skoda was meant to stop this. If you find similar odd wear, new tyres and a 4 wheel alignment check might be worthwhile?

Certain tyres when worn can cause a droning noise similar to a bearing failing. My Old Skoda Octavia was well known for this. How much wear is left in your current set of tyres?

The wife's Suzuki Swift is a cracking little car. Turns on a sixpence. Feels really cheeky. A lot of fun. Especially for the money. Now why did I spend so much on the R again...? Oh I remember.... That sensation away from the lights 😆

It was my usual commute - 20 mins of slow country roads to the motorway, then just under an hour at 65-70. I wasn't in a hurry to get to work. But I won't be posting the MPG for my typical return journey. But going fast on the motorway is not very exciting. I like traffic lights and roundabouts - THAT's why I bought this car 😀 What I'm confused about is that when I've *really* tried on similar occasions, the best I've seen is high 38. No idea what I did different when trying-a-bit this time. Was expecting warmer weather to make a difference, but the temp yesterday was about 10-12C I think, so not unusually warm. Sorry to bring the topic up again. But couldn't contain my excitement 😁

I nearly included GPS info by accident myself, so thought a warning to others would be useful? And maybe it's possible for a forum admin to work up a quick script to bulk process any images already uploaded directly to the site to strip exif data? (Obviously you can't cater for images hosted elsewhere). But feel free to remove my posts if you'd like.

Yup. But my point is that the data is already on here. I've just downloaded a couple of images chosen at random (screenshots of car interiors on this forum) - and could view the GPS location of where the photo was taken. If someone wanted to target Golf Rs in particular, a couple of hours spent doing the same could potentially provide some likely locations?

Just a random thought... I was just uploading a photo from my iPhone of my car interior (rather sad trumpeting of my achieving the mythical 40 mpg!) when I noticed that by default the picture contained geolocation/geotagging (GPS) information. This pinpointed the *exact* location where the photo was taken. Just wondering whether everyone else is aware of this? If not, a photo of your car uploaded to a forum could potentially provide your home location... For more info, and a free app to remove the GPS data, see http://www.idownloadblog.com/2014/03/16/how-to-remove-gps-geolocation-geotags-from-iphone-photos/

GTI Clubsport S Brakes - worthwhile OEM+ Upgrade?
Russellj replied to GrayMK7R's topic in Modifying your Golf R MK7
Thanks for the prices! -
That sounds more like it! My 1850 was not quick but was the same brown colour with faux sheepskin seat covers {shudders}

Sounds like £600 for new CS disk and pads on the front. Anyone know off the top of their head how that compares with the standard R versions? I like the look of the drilled disks, the idea of rustless hubs, and more stopping power - not that I really need the latter - I don't track my car (or plan to). My perception is that the standard R discs and pads don't last that long. So if the CS ones were also better wearing that might give me an excuse to go for the drilled look...? -
Dolomite! Feat. fire extinguisher. Nice touch 😀 Had an 1850 for a short time with a horrendous geabox rattle and an odd interior smell. Didn't rate it myself. Was yours a Sprint?

Um, why not take it back home the long way??? Problem solved! 😀 I believe you used to be able to get some kind of paper book which shows the roads and allows you to plot a route (not necessarily the most direct, efficient or fastest/shortest or without tolls). Go analogue! It's making a come back.

Think that was the revised version (the more rounded one like a mini Ferrari, as opposed to the original wedge shaped one as per the pic?).

1988 Fiat Uno Turbo ie (MkI). Metallic green. Felt super fast in a straight line, but a little unstable round corners. First turbo car - loved that sensation ever since. Most worrying moment was when she wouldn't start one day. Engine turned over but wouldn't catch. Mechanic turned up popped the bonnet and noticed a fine jet of petrol! The fuel line over the top of the engine was mostly braided metal but had a small section of rubber hose in the middle section which had split. Zikes! Electrics were also "interesting" - leccy windows never quite worked properly. And the flimsy door trim peeled off. And the fabric wore through on the drivers seat. And the bodywork was so flimsy that when I locked myself out one day I was able to pull back the top corner of the drivers door and pull up the door lock popper inside with a coat hanger (seriously!). (Library pic, not my actual vehicle)

I've just purchased a Netatmo Presence exterior security camera & light. Not cheap @ £250 but gets good reviews on Amazon - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01LY7NQ8D Can't comment on video quality etc as it's not yet installed, but seems to meet my needs on paper. I had a few requirements: 1) From reading a bunch of different reviews I'd decided that interior cameras trying to film through a window from inside would be blinded by the reflection of their own LEDs, so useless for night time recording. 2) I didn't want the hassle and eco damage of a battery powered camera 3) I didn't want to pay a monthly/ annual subscription fee (which could be changed at any time) Hope that helps someone

Carwow great video of new GTI and R; 0-60 in 4.2 seconds!
Russellj replied to Spinstorm's topic in VW Golf R MK7 Chat
Sounds like you're comparing 18" wheels on the GTi with 19" on the R? That's not fair I like the 18" Cadiz on my R. And if you live in London you're probably better off with a Smart car for practicality, parking and usable performance But agree with the idea that the boy racer options seem odd given the R's target audience. Personally I'm not interested in leasing. I wanted to purchase & keep an ex-demo for a loooong time. What stunned me when I went shopping was that there was effectively no difference in the price of an ex-demo 5 door GTi with Performance Pack vs an R estate. AWD and 70hp more for free you say? And a proper sized boot? Where do I sign...? ^ This too! -
I see what you did there... 😃

Yes. Had a couple of issues with my Octy addressed under warranty. One of these (swirl flap motor) then recurred a year later, just outside of warranty, and they addressed it again foc. They also replaced my failed air con unit (known issue on the Octy) 6 months outside the warranty period for labour only as an (unprompted) goodwill gesture.

Once you've remortgaged to afford one...

Wow. Just wow. Best I've seen is 38 on a really gentle 60 mile motorway pootle trying as hard as possible. Only had the estate since Oct. Hoping to hit 40 for the same trip on a warm summer's day. And (only) then will I be happy (about the consumption). I am *very* happy with every other aspect of the car
