is Thereโs something wrong with my petrol flap
Russellj replied to Fletch..gti's topic in VW Golf R MK7 Chat
Search "petrol flap" and you'll find the stickiness is an FAQ - there's a tsb for this issue. Can't recall any reports of off-centredness though. -
Look forward to hearing the outcome.

Suspension 'jiggle' after pothole encounter?
Russellj replied to Russellj's topic in VW Golf R MK7 Chat
Hallo. Didn't find anything. But still have the same perception. Friend of mine who borrowed the car reports it being most apparent around 80-85mph (wouldn't be me as I never exceed 70) ๐ Cars now on 37k miles and due 4 new tyres very shortly, so am wondering/hoping that maybe balance may be out and problem goes away. Tyres haven't worn oddly so it shouldn't be tracking.- 13 replies

I have an ex-demo estate with pano-roof and leather. The roof is great - well worth holding out for. Really makes the cabin lighter and for the couple of days a year when you want to feel the air, it's great. Leather? Nah, as others have said, it doesn't feel too premium & is very expensive new. But as it came with the other ex-demo toys I wasn't complaining Was also worried about the "too cold in winter/ hot in summer" thing, but tbh heated seats address the cold issue (except for the first few minutes) and I was surprised to find that it wasn't too hot this summer. So personally those concerns have not materialised. I'd be happy with either leather or cloth, but wouldn't pay more for leather. Would also recommend DCC and Dynaudio but, as with all options, opinions vary - search for more discussion. Worth noting that (some) VW delears seemed to be rubbish at publishing the correct spec on Autotrader (or they were when I was looking 12 months ago). I gave up waiting for a vehicle with DCC but then when I phoned around the next best options, happened to stumble across a couple with it, but not listed in the ad! So worth a call to confirm exact spec if the main aspects of the vehicle (age, mileage and any essential options) match your search.

I find the estate on 18" wheels with Goodyear F1 AS3 tyres very refined & quiet (and much quieter than the original Potenzas). Noise (esp tyre noise) was a big concern for me coming from a Mk2 Skoda Octavia - tyre noise drove me nuts (think it must have been a specifically noticeable/irritating frequency). Don't notice any wind noise from the mirrors myself.

ECU Remap, Tcu Remap and Exhaust changes what do you pay in insurance
Russellj replied to Simon ST's topic in Insure Your R
I use LV at the moment (unmodified R) and for the previous 2 years with my remapped Octy. Premium is v.competitive for the Golf and was only ยฃ50 more for the Octy after the remap - was surprised that such a mainstream brand quoted only a little more. Feel like they're relatively mod friendly compared to some large insurers. My perception is that they're a decent brand. But never actually had to claim, so can't verify the pay-out experience (which I guess is what really matters). My understanding is that each insurer has their own preferred demographic/algorithim so you can be surprised by who is cheapest for you, and how that can change with car/location/time/mods. This also means that comparisons with other people won't mean a lot. But ยฃ415 doesn't sound too bad at all to me. What do they want to charge without any mods? -
I almost commented on EXACTLY that in my reply, but didn't want Rob to take it the wrong way ๐ Too many clean (let alone detailed) cars on here!

No plans myself. I think I did come across some examples (possibly even with black badges on a DBP car) with pics in other forum posts when searching before posting. I was searching for "badgeskin" as well as "badgeskins" so maybe give that a go to see how that turned out?

Ah, that's the Oryx inlay in the VW badges front & back (was trying to look for the white on white R badges and having trouble finding them in the photos! Doh!). Thanks.
-
Dammit! Was all persuaded to leave the badges silver, but then you had to post your pics! Not Max Power at all, but just the subtle kind of detail I'd imagined. Thanks Rob - appreciate your time taking & posting the pics

Yup, I could see black badges working against white. Not sure about black on black though
-
Very glossy! Great job. Enjoy!

So pretty much any option besides blue? ๐ Think grey/black would make the badges pretty much disappear. Liked the thought of blue to make the badges "pop" just a little bit. Perhaps bronze (or gold?) might work nicely too. Appreciate the suggestions!

Contemplating badgeskins for my DBP Estate (front + rear R logo and calipers) and musing colour options. Am minded to go for blue, but would appreciate thoughts & pics (with DBP paint please) - or just leave as is? I do like the subtle standard silver.

^ This works for me too. Firming of the brake pedal is the sign I look for too. Although I have recently taken to releasing the handbrake manually when first moving off as a possible nod to reducing wear on the rear brake pads/discs which are apparently 55% worn after 28k miles! (Only needed to replace discs & pads all round at 100k+ on last two cars).

Hi & welcome to the forum! I'm not sure if the mechanicals bits are the same these days but 20 years ago I had a car (MG Metro) that developed a rattle behind the speedo that varied with speed. In the end the speedo stopped working. Turned out to be a mechanically failed piece of plastic that drove the speedo gauge. Had to replace the speedo unit (which reset the odometer to zero). Not sure whether it's all drive by wire these days (and therefore not relevant)? Does the noise vary with revs or actual speed (i.e. If you stick the car in neutral and increase revs, is the sound still present)?

Currently on holiday in Northern Spain with the R estate (Portsmouth to Santander overnight ferry). Pulled into a rural petrol station today and two eager thirty-something pump attendants (one male one female) appeared. Despite my almost non-existent Spanish, and largely via the art of mime, we managed to communicate and they clearly appreciated the car. I impressed myself with understanding the question "How many caballos (horses)?". The horse racing finger gesture did help though ๐

Just had a 30k service at 18 months old. Requested DSG and Haldex oil changes when booking the service. Can't do any harm and this car is a long term keeper. I received a call a couple of days beforehand to query why the DSG and Haldex as they aren't due yet. So it sounds like my dealer still thinks they're due at 40k miles (and is also concerned about doing possibly unnecessary work). Another thumbs up for Listers Banbury.

How long does it take engine coolant dial to hit 90c?
Russellj replied to don16's topic in VW Golf R MK7 Chat
Thermostat bust and stuck in the open position? (Happened to me in a Nissan Primera GT). -
I wonder if you were thinking of some electrochemical majick? Perhaps someone should sell some "sacrificial anode" wheel accesories... https://chem.libretexts.org/Core/Analytical_Chemistry/Electrochemistry/Case_Studies/Corrosion/Sacrificial_Anode

Looks like Bluefin is now available for later models (after March 2015) in case anyone (else) was waiting/interested...

Typo instead of the 296HP in the pre-facelift R?
