Re my post below, the latest gearbox software on the VW website is 1628 https://www.jrtuning.co.uk can help you - Rob is one of the best and I am an ancient sceptic.

Hi, sorry for the delay in replying but I don't come on here often. No I don't have the details but I have an update on it all which might help you and loads of others. 1 I had the offer of the gearbox mod which was to replace or re-seal a gearbox sensor or fitting of which I don't know the details and install new software. 2 I offered to pay for the bolt mod because they wouldn't do the factory driven task at all because I have stage one mapping only. 3 They said they would do it for free but I didn't know what they did even though I could see them working on it in the air away from the MoT bay which was it was only in for. I didn't know if they had fitted the latest software or not so.... 4 I emailed Rob, my mapping guy who is JR Tuning https://www.jrtuning.co.uk. (He is brilliant and is a guy who is honest and really knowledgeable - I know this because I have an MSc in electronics). He said come down and he would check the software version and install the latest version for free (having paid him for the remap). Rob will give you your money back if you don't like their remap. 5 So I went there and he told me I still had the factory software even with full VW servicing!!!! this version is 1401. 6 He fitted the latest software which is version 1628 - this took 10 minutes to upload to the car from the VW website and he gave me a print out as evidence. 7 I am happier with this version as I can notice the difference in how Drive behaves and that there is more of a marked difference between say comfort, normal and race. I haven't tried redlining in sport as that was my other gripe in that Sport was too extreme. 8 With this upgrade, my humble conclusion is - an engine remap (from JR) with gearbox software version 1628 is a nice set up. 9 The only thing some might not like is that you only get D and S displayed in gear display mode but it still shows M1 M2 etc. Hope this helps and sorry I don't know exactly what the bolt mod is. Suggest you just book it in mate. To me it seems the bolt check bit is the crucial one.

Hi. I have just had my MoT done at Beadles of Dartford and a big shout out to them for their customer service. My R7.5 Sept 67 needed the 34K1 update but they wouldn't do it because of the engine remap. However, they did the "bolt check" part of the update for free even though I offered to pay for that part of the check. I have now spoke to JR tuning in Headcorn, Kent who did my remap and he is very professional and knows this subject inside out. He didn't know about this specific mod but did speak with confidence that all he has to do is download the latest gearbox software from VW and he is doing that next week for me. Also if you live in North Kent, Beadles VW of Dartford are currently doing MoTs for half price!!! PS I have disconnected my stop/start at the battery because the small connector is for battery sensing for the stop start. Hope this helps?

Retro-fitting Reverse Camera and Sub-woofer
IanC replied to IanC's topic in Modifying your Golf R MK7
Hi - Thank you both for the useful information and good to see the fitting instructions come with the camera. Do you mind letting me know what VCDS is please? I'm not as enthusiastic as I used to be and have not kept up with the software side. Do you need a laptop and software? I only have a top-level OBD unit. Any pointers to a beginers guide on how to use it would be helpful. Also re the sub - do you have a part number for the kit please? -
I asked this question earlier but the questions got lost in rants from others about finance. I have had my Mk 7.5 Sept 2017 R from new but didn't spec the reverse camera as it took me over the £40k tax threshold. Will it have the wiring look there so the reverse camera can be fitted? I paid for the top sat nav upgrade. Also I understand the wiring isn't there for a sub-woofer. IS this correct or does anybody know any get arounds please? I am well pleased with my recent stage one engine re-map by JR Tuning of Headcorn.

Mk8 Golf R Reveal 4 Nov - on DtD, C2C and VW Configurator...

I don't come on here often but reading this thread in summary shows VW are out of touch with the UK. No doubts the R is a brilliant all-rounder but the UK 40K vehicle tax threshold really does affect purchasing decisions among the dedicated congregation. The same applied to me when I bought my 7.5 in Sept 2017. I spent ages looking at how to spec it close to 40K but it is not so flexible as then. The point of the Golf is being lost and maybe a "tax avoidance" pack for the UK is needed..... Hey VW - why not listen/ask owners...."Wir Deutschen wissen es am besten" is failing in the UK. I chose leather seats, grey paint and Pro sat nav. I've subsequently added drilled discs and now it's out of warranty, had the power upped by JR Tuning in Headcorn to 362 BHP (I have an MSc in medical electronics and was assured by Rob's detailed ECU knowledge). I am so impressed by the curve as it is close to stock until around 4,000 RPM and the extra power is noticeable but seems so right. No round town driving compromises either!! Finally, is it possible to retro-fit the reverse camera or is the loom missing? Same goes for any speaker/bass upgrades? -

Very useful thanks - local VW said they needed the reg of a club sport to look it up. What a crap system. -

I fully agree - I've done that and it also means I only need one key for all my doors! It is also worth looking at how easy some windows can have the beading removed. If it can, then you only rely on the security tape holding the glass, which on cheap windows, may not be great.

Rosscoe38 - Thanks very much for this tip mate - works great on my car!! The VW wouldn't help me because it alters the tax code on my car and VW are obviously nervous about this sort of stuff.
