rude dog
Have an almightly crack due to stone impact this morning. After searching & reading some historic posts, there's mixed messages regarding OEM/non-OEM replacement glass. In my opinion, the VW glass seems to chip easily, but equally don't want to end up with something of poorer quality if I go with non-OEM. Can anyone give me any feedback on their replacement screen, i.e. was it OEM / was it decent quality / better or worse than the original fitment? Thanks in advance. Thanks in advance.I had mines replaced by auto glass via my insurance, £75 excess. I think it's a known fact now that the VW screens are weak as with a little stone chip it leaves cracks down the hole screen, regarding the quality of non oem. I've had no issues since (13 months ago) it was fitted, it did looked similar quality and fitment was perfect.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
xPETEZx
I had mine replaced with non-OEM about a year ago. Its pilkington screen. No issues. Done through my insurance, so just a £75 excess to pay.
step
I had mine replaced a week after taking delivery for a stone chip. Done by Autoglass via insurance. I asked about OEM and the technician said they use the same glass from the same manufacturer but they do not have the rights to the VW logo. However, the service and fitting was excellent, would never know it had been replaced.
webbmeister
Agree with step...had mine changed a month after delivery. Changed by Autoglass and no difference and a great job completed by the fitter.
Shug
I have been in a Pilkington glass screen production plant. Same line, just stamped with OEM logo on some. Pilks (or Nippon as the are now) do the development. All the car manufacturer does is assemble the components.

Why do we pay for insurance??? A windscreen and labor for £75?? Not sure where your buying and having things done but i want to know. I had mine done recently i cant be fussed with the hassle of insurance and possible effect on no claims so i always buy my screens though the same place. £175 later and he shows me the receipt to where he buys the screen @ £110. The only thing to look out for is, if you have Dynaudio make sure they fit the correct glass.

rude dog
Thanks for the replies everyone. Probably safe to go with insurance Autoglass then as long as it's stamped with a recognised brand. Naz7r
LouCyffer
I had a screen replaced in Jan 14 on my MK5 GTI. My insurer was Churchill, when I told them I required an OEM screen, they refused as my car was 7 years old. We went round and round for 48 hours, me arguing that as my screen was VW, I was entitled for like-for-like while they refused. They said that the most they would pay out for a screen was £175. I told them to write me a cheque for that amount, and I would have a screen (OEM) supplied and fitted by a local accident repair centre. I must echo those who have said that the OEM screen comes out of the same factory as the pattern item, but usually doesn't have the VW logo. The windscreen fitter and accident repair centre both confirmed this. If I had to have a screen replaced again, I'd take the pattern one and save my cash.... roberth
Glassman
Glass is generally thinner. A thinner sandwich construction will not withstand an impact as well as a thicker piece of glass. That said, if the roads in the UK were in a better state of repair and maintenance, we would all be focusing on how great these lightweight windscreens are in the overall performance of modern cars... Also, ReapSTAR's comments: 2 hours ago, ReapSTAR said: Well, if you take into account that each screen probably costs less than £10 to produce and that fitters are generally on daily wages and that they change a certain amount of those windscreens a day for a set wage, you can easily figure out that they make money from us when we pay our £75 even though we have paid our insurance to insure us in the event of such occurrences... just seems like people these-days are lacking in ability to reason and question anything... same goes for GAP why do we accept that we have to pay insurance to cover our insurance just in-case we need insurance.... it just baffles me how people lovingly bend over and spread with a big gaping smile, it's like we want to be spit roasted or something. I know I'm better off talking to an innate object but still... there's always a chance a seed will be sown. 8 hours ago, ReapSTAR said: £75 excess... covers the cost of glass replacement and wages for fitter plus profit. Why do we pay for insurance??? Insurance is the very same thing as Insecurity. Ever heard of Assurance? Back to OP, VW replaced mine under warranty due to the seal being out of place, it has been fine ever since, I did have a stone fly up recently and hit it but thankfully it only made a tiny mark!! The 75-quid is the policyholder contribution (excess) towards a bill which the insurer settles. There are some insurers (like Admiral, Churchill and Direct Line) who have an 'approved repairer' deal with a nationally operated company, and the average invoice deal in place means - in some cases - the policyholder pays more than the insurer. And how much do you think it costs to send a teenager to fit one? If he does 10 a day that's £750... clearly profit making is being applied here at the expense of the policyholder... I just find it criminal.. 75 is not the cost of a windscreen, nor the labour charge. I'm not sure I'm understanding what is so 'criminal' even by your crude (and incorrect) calculations. Do you begrudge businesses/people making a profit?

Queens English from now on sorry Mick. Although we have a few friends from across the pond, VWROC is currently predominantly UK populated. Enjoy sparing with our friends over the water and point out that English was invented here (waits to be shot down) and they chose to mess around with it lol. Dont think the "profit" racket is coming from the £75 excess, as it does not go anywhere near covering the replacement. I believe the excess is set at this level to prevent people putting in bogus claims. Of all the things to hate insurance for, I dont think this is one of them.
