Hi Olly,

It really depends on what you can compare the heavy clutch pedal to? Can you test drive another manual Golf R?

What car do you drive now? Is the car standard? could it have an upgraded clutch fitted already?

I have had my manual R for nearly a year now, compared to the Skoda Citigo I had before it felt very heavy but you get used to it.

If I drive my Wife's Skoda Yeti now, in comparison the clutch feels very light (but the Yeti clutch is heavier than the Citigo)

Better to try and compare to another manual R and I'd be more worried about where the bite is in the pedal travel and no juddering etc

@Olly - has the car been remapped? The factory clutch fitted to the R with manual transmission is often unable to handle the extra power of a remap (it can suffer from slippage), so it’s possible a previous owner may have had an upgraded clutch fitted. Upgraded clutches can feel heavy compared to the factory spec clutch that VW would have originally fitted to the car.

Thank you both for your replies,the car is stock and I currently drive a bmw 116d which has recently had a new clutch so I know about the juddering you mentioned and the golf doesn’t seem to have that.the bite seems pretty high but I’m used to driving diesel so maybe it’s that?I’ve also found older posts on here and it does seem quite common in some and not others?

@Olly: Hi.

Hmm......."65 plate"?

Shirley this can't mean that this mk7 was built in 1965! I'm aware that the land of King Chuck went through a metrication process - maybe "65 plate" is a  left-over designation from the old imperial measurement system?

As for your specific question - my experience with the manual gearbox on the mk7 R is also that it tends to be on the heavy side - but of course this is a very personal perception.  Is the clutch on this car original factory OEM?

@dv52

For your info,reference, guidance, & your anorak store….

In UK the Year the National registration plate for new vehicles since September 2001 changes twice each year.

March - August

then

September-Feb.

(Before this letters were used, as a suffix and later a prefix,  to designate year of new registration. 😬)

Starting in September 2001 from 51.  Then March 2002 was 02…
 …and so on each year.

So. In 2025 a new  car bought in March would be 25 reg.  From September 2025 it is 75.

The reg for a vehicle typically has two regional letters, then the year numbers, then three further random letters.
Eg. My VW Golf gti, bought new in May 2012 was NA12WCK  - Newcastle, north east 2012 WCK..   aka “on a 12 plate”.

The OP referring to a 65 plate is shorthand for a car registered between Sept 15 and end Feb 16.
hth a little,
Sleep well tho😁

@NRW

Neil: Wow - thanks!!

I keep learning everyday - albeit my decrepit brain is now at a stage where for every new bit of stored information, I need to forget a previously understood fact.

With due deference to your advice - I will need to think long and hard if I want to replace a known fact in my dwindling memory bank to make room for UK's unique National plate registration protocol!!

No offense intended - but again, thanks for the information

Maybe the reason you don’t like people is that you have zero people skills yourself.
