IanC
Evening all, Â My car just got back from the local dealers after having two new headlamp assemblies fitted - one was a dodgy main beam and the other was causing an AFS warning. Â Anyway, because they only fitted one side by some internal cock-up and it went back in again this week, they left a new data plug in the OBD port. Â I thought that's a nice apology and it looks quite useful I did a search on how much it would cost to buy and it seems they are now giving them away. Â https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/volkswagen-dataplug-free-during-promotion-normally-80-2766027 Â Don't know if it's still running but worth a try. Â I am now registered on car net and the options will keep our younger enthusiasts happy for hours. Â Sorry if this has already been posted on here and I'm well behind the times
MK_Turmeric
All of the online marketing mentions this and my survey from VW today asked whether my dealer mentioned it when picking the car up.  They didn't and I didn't see a single bit of marketing in the showroom about it. So whether it's still active who knows.  Think it'll be useful?
IanC
it's marketing crap really. Â Why the hell do I need to print off PDFs of my journey and compare my driving abilities with VW Camper van owners? Â Car-net is really a posh hybrid Google and is certainly not for use when driving. Â Â

TheJay
The data plug for VW Connect? I thought it was kinda cool when I first picked my new 7.5R, but the novelty quickly wore off. Once it has a big more functionality it may be worth it, but currently... I reached 85% efficiency on my commute... so? I just drove 81 miles with an average speed of 50mph... well that's just incriminating. I just refuelled... I know, I was there. Â I just don't see the point at the moment. Give it a year to see where they take it, but for now... nagh. TeaJay
IanC
Quite agree with it being in its infancy.  Another thought - if the Taxman can now see your bank transactions, this could lead to the the Police wanting access to your driving data !!! 😇    Edited December 16, 2017 by IanC Typo
wedgeford
Quite agree with it being in its infancy.  Another thought - if the Taxman can now see your bank transactions, this could lead to the the Police wanting access to your driving data !!!    Agreed, there has been some previous discussion on here that if you download the data to the phone app, could that be used by the police if they asked for it. I did use it at first, but the link to the app is random at best and my phone just keeps flagging how much power it's using in the background.Sent from my ONEPLUS A3003 using Tapatalk
xPETEZx
I kinda like it. Â Its nice to see your journey history, and the cost of a journey. Â I would like the app to be able to do more, like read fault codes. Â For "free" (The price being them having my 'anonymous' data) I think its ok. Â With more people using it, and the longer its around I am sure it will improve.
PMK
When I picked up my R the dealer mentioned that they had fitted the dongle. He said that vw will probably start charging for it in the future.
Cheeks50
Had mine since I purchased my used R last September - only realised a few weeks ago that the "top speed" is listed in the journey details..........   way too incriminating should the 'feds' get access to it I do hope this app is secure.  Anyone else concerned - or does no one go over the legal limit on the motorway when deserted at night! LouCyffer
Ive had one for a few months. It worked well at first, then rapidly became sporadic at recognising any journeys. The novelty of seeing your journey traces and GPS data soon faded, and I have removed mine. I don’t miss it. I’ve used Road Trip iOS app to record my motoring expenses for years, and it doesn’t share my data with anyone else....
Darren
mine seems to be working great sitting on the back seat in its box Geeza and Cdj3.2
S800BRN
I’ve had mine a fair while now. No issues at all. More of a gimmick than anything I’d say. The journey costs can be quite surprising though!
OryxSciroccoR
Not got one myself but always hear rumours on other VW forums about VW having access to your journey details and driving habits and it being a matter of time before they use the data as evidence to decline warranty work.Paranoia in my opinion but at the same time it is VW at the end of the day. NP46
Out of curiosity how do they obtain the journey data?
