I love that guy. He really knows his stuff. It’s just difficult to find the time to “drop the car off “ as he is in the USA and I’m in Ireland. And I’m sure I’ve missed half a dozen other things. 😂 Is this for real? The lack of lower engine cover, under tray and shrinking bonnet insulation on the MK8? TechieAli
My sister has just had her coolant housing and pump replaced on her mk7 GTI for £636 by an independent. VW wanted £1040. Her electronic motor driven thermostat was stuck closed which was causing it to overheat. (Motor no longer working). VCDS reported low coolant flow, it reported not to be driven over 4K rpm on the dash and obviously temp gauge went all the way around to the red. What was really weird is VCDS never flagged an electrical issue with the motor just poor coolant flow. So I would assume there is a flow meter sensor somewhere. Oh 5yr old and 46k. camelsac2002

I did some research after - at least on the bonnet insulation shrinking, and saw a post on here about it on the MK7 that VW blamed on a mod the owner had done Booth11

My car is not modded (aside from pedal box and some cosmetic stuff) and my bonnet insulation is now the size of a postage stamp - ok exaggeration, but it’s shrunk like most of them, modded or not. I should have got it replaced under warranty but never got round to it. I expect they would have blamed its shrinking on me detailing my car. 😁

Based on my last "Specific Components" VW warranty I just purchased, that much pays for nearly four years of warranty from VW - which will cover the coolant issue + a whole lot of other things. Given how common the coolant / thermostat issue is - warranty is worth buying just for that! Could be worth looking into for your sister? I better take a look soon. Maybe they'll blame mine on leaving my car in the sun too long. Or using the wrong car wash+wax liquid on it. Only VW authorised car wash liquids may be used on ze car. Mine shrank early on so I really should have had it replaced during the original warranty. It’s just the top (or bit nearest the windscreen) where it’s shrunk so the tabs no longer slot into the holding slots. The rest is all anchored down with the pins. Like so It can be the next owners problem!
Dr Mike Oxgreen
^^^^^ I have exactly the same problem. I just slip the tags back into the slots every time I check the fluid levels, all the time thinking that if I wanted that kind of build quality I'd have bought a Vauxhall... TechieAli
Even if my sister had taken and extended warranty (2 on top of the original 3) it would have still been outside of that. It is her first issue though otherwise it’s been faultless. Cars just aren’t what they used to be. They just make them cheaper and cheaper and just charge more. camelsac2002

Barry Singleton
Have same issue on a 2016 Mk7 GTI with 70k miles. Martins Garage would not fit new thermostat without an assessment charge of 1hr @ £150. Total estimate is an additional 3hrs labour plus cost of parts: £366 for thermostat housing and £82 for water pump. Total cost will be approx. £1200. Decided to keep topping up as leak is very minor at the moment. From below a small 'hanging' drip can be seen below the thermostat housing. If it gets worse I will consider using a coolant sealant. Another thought is....Why do garages insist on changing the housing when it is the seal that leaks ?
