Cheers Rebecca, long time no talk !

Yeah, looking forward to it now. I've had my MK8 for over 3 years and I've been very happy with it. It's been largely gremlin-free. But of course the launch of the 8.5 got the hamster spinning in my head again and here I am!

They are a very expensive car here now, the CS is about 10k more retail than it was when I bought in 2021. The R is just too far out of reach realistically...

It’s been a while!  Hope you’re keeping well Joe.

Good to hear your mk8 was a pretty well behaved car, unlike some.  A good sign you’ve been tempted by the 8.5.  I think they’ve made some really good changes with the facelift.  The prices in Ireland much higher than UK I recall and even more so now which is a pain but you must be used to it.  The 8.5 CS is a lovely car!  You must share some photos in the new arrivals thread when you get yours.

My mk8R was good overall, just a shortish spell of gremlins which a new steering wheel sorted, but the 8.5R came at the right time for me to make the switch and the prices here aren’t too bad.  Picking up the new R  tomorrow.

Yeah I'm really liking the changes they've made with the 8.5. Making the exterior black plastics gloss black rather than the matt black really lifts the looks and overall I think they've addressed the more "challenging" aspects of the MK8's looks very well.

My current car is still on its original steering wheel! Of course I've had the occasional bing/bong but I've never had any persistent ones. The only persistent annoyance has been a squeak/groan from the front suspension which the dealers have never resolved... not my problem for much longer though!

The R Black edition is about €82k here before you tick any options....

Wow, €18k difference between the CS and R base models when it's less than £2k in the UK?

Someone please help me to understand this one.

Well, not quite. The "Black edition" is 81K. The "base" R starts at about 76K! And the CS starts at about 64k.

So yeah, still a significant jump between them. You can put it down to the crippling taxes that are applied to cars here, particularly those cars in the higher emission bracket.

Are you tempted by an 8.5 CS @AHG?

Always …

CS is the pinnacle of chuckability and practicality

Lots of power, Sporty calibration, Special mode, electronic front differential (which we don’t have), and still light weight (1.4t) and nimble.

The R is more a serious weapon

while CS is more a terrific and fun toy 🙂

Yes I’d agree with that summary.  My GTIs that preceded my Rs were more chuckable and ‘fun’ for sure, and it’s great to have those distinctions between the variants.  The CS looks and is a very sporty model.  For me the attributes of the R are more suited to my needs and wants. Less fun but more thrill and the AWD a big plus for me, and it keeps getting better and better.

Someone has become Mr Statistics for 2025! 😂

Us 2024 people are already yesterday’s news even though we (some of us) haven’t even got our cars yet.  🤣

Baha.... funny 😁🤣😂 Dont worry 2024 is not forgotten and we are excited to see and hear about your cars 😜

Its just hard to keep track of it all otherwise, i'm just doing it for those that should arrive before April. I presume all our cars will be on the same boat 🤷‍♂️
