No I don’t think it is! The Irish specs across the performance Golf range are very close, if not identical to you guys in the UK.

I’d assume it is similar to UK as both are almost the only RHD in Europe (also Cyprus) so probably same product manager configures them.

So you’ll have 1/3 of the run in already done by the time you reach home

Conti 7 😂  Definitely get them on straight off and sell the factory tyres as new.

I second that motion

Great tyres make all the difference

No not really actually. It’s only in relative recent years that VW Ireland started spec’ing cars to a decent level. About 2014/15 there was a big shakeup. I bought a new MK7 GTI in 2013 and had to pay for such luxuries as climate control, 18’s, xenons, all of which were standard in the UK.

Of course we pay very handsomely for it. And neither is there any such thing here as a broker similar to what you have with Carwow or Drive the deal. You want a new car? Your only option is dealing directly with the main dealer. And discounts are slim to none!

I’ll try to be sparing with the photos - I think you’ve all been unwillingly subjected to total photo overload with my previous cars.  😀

Yours however, we will want to see lots of photos, so when Monday comes around get snapping!   Are you getting excited for Monday?

As much as I take the micky on you not wanting the dealer to touch Pablo, I can only admire the passion and knowledge you quite clearly have for not only cars, but the R in particular which I have to be honest, is what is getting me excited the most. Picking up a new car is a really exciting fanfare for me at the best of times but to be finally owning a car I’ve heard so much about and is infamous in both the car enthusiast market and the more dark side of society, it’s clearly a special car! I’ve been in the fortunate position in my time to have picked up a few brand new cars but this one feels special. This community is truly unique and feels like I’m joining a big family and a responsibility is being placed upon my shoulders becoming an owner of what is quite clearly a marvel in German engineering. So short answer, yes, I’m VERY excited! Might even need to take some night nurse the night before to help me sleep!

One tip (that I like) try the surround sound option on the HK

Took me a bit to get used to it but it is amazing and makes spatial condensation to take full advantage of the physical acoustics of the car.

I have it at max level all the time now. I think that is the HK’s greatest party trick.

Thanks Kev!

I probably should be more excited than I am. I doubt I’ll be losing any sleep with wild anticipation 😄  but I am looking forward to getting the car. I’m expecting a grubby car which will be even grubbier by the time I get home. 😂  Trying to figure out when I can squeeze its first wash in as the weekend is pretty full with stuff and I don’t think it will go down too well if I prioritise cleaning my car over other things.  🤔 😂

Setting off at a reasonable time (train leaves my local station at 7:46) not too early as earliest handover appointment they had available for me was 11:30, so I arrive at 11am and it’s a short walk to the dealership from train station.  My daughter has decided she’s coming with me so she’s ditching school tomorrow as she loves a trip up north, any long drive and train journey.  😁  She’s currently revising for A-level mocks in early Jan so she’ll be doing that on the journey. It’ll probably take me 4.5/5 hours minimum drive back but who knows what the traffic will be like!

That is a reasonable time and very acceptable, but still you might be able to have wee nap on route whilst your daughter is revising 😂 Does your daughter get excited about a new R?

Regarding washing the car I'm stressing for you, honestly Im sure I could not function knowing my new car is outside waiting to be cleaned, it would eat away at me 😬😂😂 Must find time. Right Christmas is cancelled ❌

Well I hope its a chilled and enjoyable day for you both 🥳

I love the fact you just have a set of Conti 7 lolling about in your loft.  Most people have these things in their garage. 😂  Definitely get them on straight off and sell the factory tyres as new.

Yes they were sat in my living room for about 3 months, eeehee…..boundaries were pushed, and then Christmas came round 😂 so up they went.

Do you think i should rock up at the dealer with a trolley full of tyres and ask them to swap it out on the day 😂 or shall i send them up there by courier in advance 🚚😂 with my name plastered on it and await their call, then tell them to swap them out 😂🤣 Just kidding.

It’s really great that you’re so excited @TheJetMan and rightly so!  It’s also nice when it feels like a special one, so I really hope that you have a great collection day on Monday and try to get through the next few nights without losing too much sleep.  😊

Thank you for your kind words - I do love an R, there is just something about them!

I agree, this a truly fantastic community and a wonderful place for us all to share our enthusiasm and knowledge collectively.  A forum is only as good as its members so thank you to all!

Good tip.  I too find the HK system much better with surround sound on.

Yes it a pretty quick train journey which is great, assuming no delays which is always an unknown.

My daughter is excited - she used to get very upset when we changed cars (cried when old cars went) but I think she’s grown out of that now.  Now she can drive and has her own car (Mark) she loves that!   I’m not sure she’s going to warm to Pablo instantly as she didn’t like Snoopy at first but then after a while she loved him. 😁

Pablo, here we come!

I just went through the whole process up to the point you pay (adding it manually) and nothing about Ghost.  But yes do let me know what they say when you phone them. 😊

Okay, so I’ve just spoken with ALA, they confirm that currently they do not require any ghost immobiliser or tracker to provide GAP insurance on a golf R. They state that in the new year their underwriters are going to become “more selective” and don’t believe they are going to go as far as requiring ghost or tracker but they said things are changing but advise if a policy is purchased during the current terms, it will be honoured.

So just be aware folks who are looking to get GAP for their R, underwriters are tightening up and so suggest getting GAP ASAP. (Of course will always suggest a tracker and/or ghost for your R due to how popular it is amongst criminals.)

And to confirm, direct gap require a tracker or ghost before they will provide cover.
