zeebow
so I'm new to VW, just curious to see if any of you have had issues so far with the mk7r. also, is there any common issues that I should watch out for, in terms of vw? for instance, my last two Hondas had tranny problems. my civic si has an issue where it is difficult to get into third gear. (and UK gets the type R, we are jealous here in the states)
invisiblekid
It's very early on so I'd imagine hardware issues will perhaps come some months down the line. There are some reports of hesitation under acceleration.
almac
The only fault I have heard of so far was as a result of a tuning box being added to an S3 which had a turbo bac exhaust fitted (S3 of course being the same car in drag). The fault was something to do with a "Rod". Not sure what rod and have no fault code to provide as it is 2nd hand info.

neilje
There are some reports of hesitation under acceleration. On DSG in 'Normal' mode, if you decide to suddenly floor it while pottering around it seems to come off the throttle momentarily (about 1 second) before putting it all in again - then you shoot off. It's almost as if it's been caught out and is thinking about what to do. The following post seems to indicate the same symptoms, and as they have said, it will be interesting to see if a solution follows. Sorry for dragging up an old thread, but I hadn't seen it until someone linked to it today. My current car, a remapped Mk1 TT suffered from a hesitation when accelerating. I'm sure it's the same thing. Foot flat on the floor, and the car backs off the throttle before throwing it back on fully. Quite fun to get flung backwards but a bit scary if you've committed to an overtaking manoeuvre. I'm afraid I can't remember the exact details of the issue, but the ECU was doing this in order to protect the engine. There are numerous sensors in these engines measuring temperature, pressure etc. in various locations and each has a normal operating range. If the sensor goes beyond this range, the ECU will try to compensate and normally this means backing off the throttle until that sensor returns to normal. In my case this was ½ to 1½ seconds or thereabouts. You won't get a warning light and there may not even be an error logged, but if you monitor the system with a laptop plugged into the diagnostic port while driving, you can see this happening. In my case the fix was to back off the remap to reduce boost and this solved the problem, at the expense of some BHP. If this is what's being seen on your Golfs, then it's going to to be interesting to see what VW do to fix it. They can't exactly reduce the power of the cars, unless they are providing over the advertised power in their current state. Owners aren't going to be happy to get their car out of the dealers to discover it's down on power. It's not so noticeable in 'Sport' mode but it is still there. zeebow
I'm planning on a manual so hopefully I won't get hesitation in other forums (I used to be really into cars), I've seen users who keep track of common issues, even forming online petitions for known issues. this was the case with the US spec honda civic si. also, forums would be a great place to make "sticky" threads with official recalls or technical service bulletins as we call it in the states. you know what is a problem with VW?? THE GOLF R ISNT IN THE US YET!!!!!
Jimble
The hesitation problems reported (i was one of them) is in the manual, it comes in 2nd and 3rd mostly under moderate acceleration between 1500 and 2500rpm, it seems to be getting a little less as the miles go on but it's still frustrating, i'm going to ask if there are any software updates when it goes in, one of the LED's in the drivers door hasn't worked from day one. mdian
The other issue, though not specific to the R, is the sound actuator which appears to rattle in its mounts. I've come across it twice and believe others have too.

Jimble
Another one not specific to the R is the drivers windscreen wiper smearing, i had mine replaced on day one due to them skipping but they're still smearing, might need to get them changed again. mdian
Rather than starting a new thread, can I just ask, has anyone else noticed a bit of play in their brake pedal left to right (about 0.5-1cm either side)? Just wondering if mine might be a little loose; feels like it has a small step initially when you press it, but not sure if that might just be because the car has 20 miles on it!!! The 'step' I think is normal and I had it on my 6R manual too. I guess it is some kind of switch. The 'play' you mention I have too in the DSG. Was thinking of putting it up on here too and mentioning it to dealer when I get around to it. Will be interesting to see how many others have it. It's not a problem for me but doesn't make the build quality appear to be solid on such an important pedal.
