Delay in power delivery when accelerating hard (DSG)

When you say 'power delivery' are you referring to the time it takes to change gear. I have had a couple of occasions when starting off hard in 'sport' where the rev limiter cuts in before the DSG box changes gear. It's as if it doesn't realise. Acceleration stops briefly while it realises it needs to change up. It is more noticeable from 1st to 2nd, although I have had it 2nd to 3rd.

Bloody annoying when you're showing someone 'how quick it is'.

Anyone else noticed it?

Yes, it has the characteristics of turbo lag but is definitely a DSG "thing". If waiting to come out of a junction and you want to nip out sharpish before oncoming traffic, there is about a 1 second delay from when you depress accelerator to when you start moving. There is also a hesitant up-shift to 2nd before you start tramping on. There is no smooth and instant power delivery on mine in Race and Normal.

The box does hold the gears longer in Race + Sport and I've also found when on the limiter there is about a 1-2 second period of hitting the rev limit before change up.

Its not run in yet so will see if its just a DSG learning period

:afro: all good from me too now I've sorted the wipers out,my transmission from fords to vw's has been very good, the only things that have been slightly an issue for me is the way the limiter/cruise operates and the way the interior lights don't come on when you turn the engine off, foot wells stay on though saying that it's no hardship to press the overhead switch.

These comments are now making me regret going for the DSG rather than stick with a trusted manual. I want a car that when you press the loud pedal it moves......not spend a bit of time thinking about moving :-( feeling a bit deflated now

Listen it's not a big deal. The car has enough going for it to make this an annoyance more than anything and it may sort itself after the running in period.

The jury is out on this for me. Two days ago I was ready to trade it in for a manual, but I have given it some thought whilst driving and wondered if we all become complacent and lazy once in a DSG. We do exactly that...press the pedal and expect a miracle every time, forgetting that sometimes the gearbox needs a little finesse from us too. On more than one occasion I've "pressed the pedal" at the same time as changing down with the paddle with slight impatience, only to simultaneously drop down two gears as kickdown happens by mistake. If I'd been driving a manual I'd never expect to drop down a gear without a fractional lifting off, indeed a very quick bit of ballet. I think we need to learn DSG a bit more and perhaps be a bit more sensitive with it, and anticipate just as one would with a manual before we judge it. It seems to be best driven with a combination of manual and and paddles (a combo I discovered only two days ago). That way you have most control, yet it can instantly be put back into D when you want to be lazy.

IMO it's an amazing gearbox, it's us drivers who are less amazing.

Have you actually driven it?

I'm not encountering any of those kind of delays at all. If you put your foot down it will go. Just remember that it is trying to anticipate your moved, so you can fool it. However if you treat it like you should you won't encounter that.

Putting your foot down and go wide open throttle will have super quick gear changes. Much quicker than I could possibly do in a manual. I really don't get where these 2 second delays come from as it isn't my experience and I would definitely take it I. To the dealer to get it checked.

I haven't driven a DSG, drove the manual and really fell in love with the car. Read reviews about the S3 and R and just thought I'd try something different. That's the nervous bit, because I hadn't driven it then reading these. So many have the DSG so I've kind of went with the majority. I have 10 days after receipt of the car to change my mind according to the lease folk. Hope I just fall in love with it!

Never change your first thought..it's mostly the right one.. :smug:

Well put. I loved it for the first week, fell out of love for week two when I started to drive more aggressively without understanding it, and now I'm just beginning to learn it, and I'm excited by it again. Very.

Stop reading forum posts from people who have not yet learned how to drive a DSG car  , they will likely scare you  , make up your own mind when you driven it for a month + :afro:

I had DSG in my Ed30 and loved it, the only time I disliked it was when stuck in snow

Easy there my friend :azn: , I wouldn't make presumptions regarding anyone's ability to drive a DSG or S-tronic box. Some of us are quite long in the tooth and have driven sports autos for years.

You are right though in that we all have to make up our own minds, its horses for courses at the end of the day.

First Post, So HI ALL :imnew:

I felt exactly the same when I bought my R32 DSG. It felt hesitant and got me into a couple of predicaments, I really questioned my decision on getting an auto. I got used to it over time and now couldn't live without an auto box. I had DSG on my TTS which was great and in contrast made the latest Mercedes auto box feel very lazy indeed. Although the Mercedes did not have the "DSG Lag".

The way I thought about it was that when your at a stand still, imagine that the initial stamp on the loud pedal is like bringing up the clutch. Seemed to make sense in my addled mind.

Really looking forward to getting back into a DSG car, especially one with 300hp :D
