*NEW* Mk8.5R operational tips

Recommended Posts

So, just had a pick up day for a friend’s GTI 8.5 and am happy to report some mostly terrific and positive changes I was not aware of:

1. When parking and going forward, the front camera shows and not the reversing one. Can be a great way to avoid curbing the lip (as I did).

2. The speed warning can be set to 10kph above limit and is not very annoying, unless you remain there for a long time. It can be changed into “visual only” but it does reset after a restart (even less than 15min). Maybe can be coded to remember. Not sure,

3. No button at the end of the signal stalk for Lane assist turn off.

4. Start/Stop can be put as a button on the top of the screen, and it stays there. So you just have to tap once and it’s off. No menus.

5. Waze instruction can be seen in the dash/hud, not on,y native apps (maps).

6. Oil level can be viewed in the menu.

7. Carbon trim does look nice. Noticeably.

8. Seat cooling and SYNC can be operated from the AC shortcut bar at the bottom of the screen. No need for the main AC screen whatsoever.

9. Self parking is epic now more than ever. Nothing to do but wait.
10. Headlight internal look dark and awesome in Black edition (or black style in GTI)

11. Assist menu includes Lane Change, which is new. Haven’t tried it, but it’s nice to have.
12. Car will auto lock when leaving it with the key with you

BTW, some assists came turned off (Side and others) so you may want to check for that in pick up day, especially if you’ve become use to relying on them.

Must be forgetting some more stuff I wanted to let you know about.
but that’s it for now.

P.S. @Booth11, If this is not the right thread for this, please let me know or move it to where it belongs.

Great info @AHG, thanks for posting.  👍

Same question as Len though.

Is there another quick way to do it or is it only via the screen, backward step if it's gone.

Backwards it is … screen only

either via under screen button or top of screen shortcut

there you get the full list of assists

My friend is already pressing me to find time for an OBD session, to do the ‘remember last position’ on the Lane Assist, and possibly on the speed alarm as well (not sure if possible).

Just remembered one more feature

and this public service announcement

… so edited them in

I’ve created this new thread for mk8.5R operational tips as sufficiently different to the mk8R tips.

@AHG I’ve moved your recent helpful posts into this new thread so they are the opening posts.

Sure. Thx.
Funny that I’d start this, not having a mk8.5 🙂

Maybe next year or two … we’ll see

Meantime, my friend said the car also auto locks when leaving it with the key.

Haven’t seen it myself, but added it to the list, just in case it is so.

12. Car will auto lock when leaving it with the key with you

Will be annoying when cleaning or working on the car

You can turn this on or off in the settings, it’s off by default tho.

Yes that is ironic that the thread starts with you so you'd better hurry up and get an 8.5R - no pressure. 😁   It's because of the way I created the new thread - I could have started it with an intro post from me (as a mk8.5R owner-in-waiting) but since you have kindly shared these tips from your experience of your friends car, I felt that the honor of being the opening thread should be yours. 🙂

Thank god!

I find it very useful as I often leave the car unlocked by a mistake, but there are some occasions when the system won’t lock it for some reason so you can turn on some notify sound or you have to check it everytime you leave the car, which kinda cancel the whole purpose of that feature haha.
