  1. After a stint with an M240i, I'm looking to get another MK7 R (pre 2016 likely). The android auto retrofit game seems to have changed significantly since I owned an R before, with a unit that offers MIB1 functionality, rather than the MIB2 or nothing approach that used to be required. Link for one below: https://bavarian-automotive.co.uk/products/volkswagen-wireless-apple-carplay-and-android-auto-mmi-retrofit-interface-vw Few youtube tutorials, seems pretty straightforward. Anyone tried this? Surprisingly can't see anyone mention it on here. Well under half the cost of an upgraded headunit, should be easier to fit, too.
  2. Hi All, Not been on here for a while, hope everyone is keeping well. I've been looking to replace my R with a 987 porsche cayman S, but no sellers seem to be up for allowing a specialist to bore scope their cars! Also been looking for a nice supercharged V6, but the (decent) manuals are too difficult to come by. So, I've decided that it's too much of a PITA/potential money pit, so I'm going to stay with the R and finally get the remap and upgraded sachs clutch that I've been after for the last two years. Not the worst compromise in the world! Before I do, though, there's some things I've been neglecting a little bit on the golf. First of all, I badly need to sort out the tyres. Had to get Kumhos on the front, and the feedback is absolutely awful. Wear rate seems really poor as well. Big mistake getting them fitted I know, but the tyre place never had the tyres I ordered and had to settle for what they had as the fronts were totally bald. After some close calls in the summers last winter, I've decided that I need to get winter wheels. I'm thinking a good compromise may be to get Michelin Crossclimate+ all round, then get summer wheels with PS4s/Goodyear F1s or something next spring or so. Obviously I'm not expecting top tier levels of grip with the crossclimates, but as it's a bit early in the year to go full winters I think they may be a good compromise. Does anyone have any feedback using them? I ran a search, but didn't really find too much on the handling aspect - are they sufficient for the R's level of performance, or do you feel them lacking on the limit? Experience with tuned cars would be great. I've also got an MOT advisory for "Front suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement" on both sides. I'm not particularly mechanically minded, so apologies if this is a daft question. Basically, would anyone say it's worth it to upgrade the bushes to uprated parts, or should I just replace with OEM? Keeping cost in mind as well! Appreciate any responses, hopefully this isn't just a wall of text!
  3. So they've disabled the dashcam and reset the trip computer. Sounds like they've done a bit more than a 'road test'. No reason I can think of to reset the trip computer otherwise. They've ragged the thing at the very least. Unfortunately one of the things you're pretty likely to encounter when taking a performance car in for work. Also concerning to me, it's had repairs done to it through an insurance claim and they're now saying it's not had a road test? I'd try and get a straight story from them with a paper trail, so you can call them out. Of course they would never admit to anything, especially the mileage altering. Very sketchy, I'm pretty shocked your insurance company aren't taking it more seriously to be honest, I'd definitely get on at them again, maybe try emailing the CEO or asking to speak to a manager or something. I hate being in you're position because they make you feel like you're a nutter, but you need to keep on at it. Absolutely unacceptable service. Hope you get it sorted.
  4. As others have said, bodywork/paint can be corrected, I'm sure you'll be able to get them to pay for a full detail, especially if you post it on social media. It's absolutely gutting no doubt. That said, I'd be a lot more concerned with the clocking - not only because it's illegal but if they've also disconnected your dashcam then who knows what they've been up to? What is the mileage discrepancy if you don't mind me asking? I'm pretty sure the ECU will have some form of digital footprint if it's been clocked.
  5. Looks legit, in line with their new styling. Absolutely horrendous, like all new cars seem to be. Maybe I'll warm to it, but I thought that about the new A class, which is still painfully ugly to me...
  6. Because you're not the owner you're more likely to take risks I'm assuming is the logic
  7. Even if an impact has caused it, if it's anything short of a brick (which you probably would've noticed) then I wouldn't think the roof would just shatter like that? Could be wrong. Either way, the fact there isn't any protective tape or anything holding it together is actually pretty dangerous. Could easily do eye damage. I'd try and get them to replace for free on those grounds, as well as the evidence earlier in the thread of multiple reports of the same thing. Hopefully this hasn't ruined the car for you
  8. The clutches are really pretty poor. Not sure based on your wording, but if they're offering free labour to fit one, bite their hand off. And go for an aftermarket uprated one, sachs or helix. It's not even just a golf R thing, pretty much all performance VWs these days have weak clutches.
  9. I've not got DCC, the ride is fine for me (although I'm on the 18s). The thing that puts me off the prets is that as Dave says they're really fragile. You'll see loads of accounts of them buckling/cracking on here. Some people reckon the cheaper replicas are actually tougher, so worth keeping in mind when looking.
  10. Spec is pretty generous as standard, it's more down to personal preference. You'll see a lot of basic ones though, most cars you'll see at that age are ex-lease. Leather is pretty rare, it wasn't a cheap option from factory
  11. If you need your car in the snow, then it's definitely worth having a spare set of wheels with winters in my opinion
  12. Just personally can't extract the same fun as I can with a proper shifter sadly Luckily my commute is pretty quiet (and has no speed cameras), meaning I can actually drive the car pretty spiritedly
  13. The salesman on the drive was pretty keen on showing me how much 'better' the auto was, so apart from the block shifting (which I wasn't aware of), I did try it out fairly extensively. Ended up leaving it on sport+ (I think it was called that). Can appreciate that when in manual it doesn't intervene and shift up for you on redline though, unlike VW's DSG. Does seem like a decent bit of kit for what it is, but again, the paddles do absolutely nothing for me. It's like playing a game or something, not driving.
  14. I don't find it a problem in traffic, but if I was commuting in rush hour everyday maybe my tune would change.
  15. Once you're used to the acceleration, it offers absolutely nothing in the way of fun for me whatsoever. Test drove an M140 with the zf, was bored within 10 mins, which takes some doing on a car with RWD and a straight six. Don't see how intelligence is required to operate it. By choosing an auto you rob yourself of the simple things like heel/toe that make driving fun.
  16. Bought a manual because autos are boring.
  17. 280?! Absolutely Insane, That's half the price of a metallic coat on a factory order in the UK.
  18. 20, had the R since 19. I don't think the need for speed ever leaves you, hopefully I'm still driving a performance car when I'm 70!
  19. Surely they check for the TD1 flag, seeing as they've approved it for warranty
  20. I can't help with your issue, but aren't electric folding mirrors standard?

    New recruit

Welcome to the forum mate, hopefully the wait isn't too long!
  22. I'd say there's probably something wrong - I get higher than 21mpg on a Sunday morning commute with an empty motorway... I'd maybe scan for error codes
  23. Cruise on at 80 returns 28+ for me. Driving like a granny you should be getting the high 30s/low 40s. Anything changed recently?
