Hi Growmac.  Do you still have your Golf R Estate?  I'm thinking about having the same towbar fitted and had already realised the diffuser will have to be cut.... 😅but I just wondered if you could post a couple of pictures of how it looks with the towbar unattached.  How big is the hole, is it very visible without the towbar in place etc?  Did you also have any thoughts about what you might do if you come to sell the car etc?  Sorry for all the questions but would really appreciate any extra info before making the decision... Thanks, Scott

I know it’s not what you asked but I went through this and just couldn’t find anyone willing to fit a Towbar in my 7.5. In the end I bought a saris bones 3 bike rack - really massive upgrade on the old one so v impressed. Sorry if you’re not doing it for a bike rack - ignore me if so...!!

Hi Stefano.  Thanks for your post.  I am doing it for the bike rack. I have a towbar mounted buzzrack for 4 bikes from my old car that I would like to "recycle".  Interestingly I'm familiar with the saris bones 3 and I agree its a great bike rack. I might end up using that as still have one gathering dust in the garge and put the extra one on the roof!!

Sounds good. One thing I just checked was that I bought a saris superbones - this is the upgraded version with internal straps that are way better than my original. I guess my ‘man maths’ justified it by selling my old one on eBay with the view I could then sell the superbones if/when I changed cars again; and all is a lot less than the towhook. Not as good I accept but the superbones feels like the next best thing to me. Obs other people will have other views on different racks etc

I've just fitted my MK7 R Estate with a Westfalia bar, I took my time to measure and carefully cut the smallest hole I could get away with in the diffuser. The electrical socket bracket, I manipulated a bit to get it super close to the bar. I had to open out the hole a bit more once it with fitted to the car with the dremmel. I've fitted it for the bike rack, I doubt I'll tow anything. I've ordered some PPF film to go on the bumper just around the area where the ball is in case of any handling errors!  If anyone needs an P/N's or pictures please don't hesitate to drop me a dm. 1990327406_WhatsAppImage2021-03-28at22_21_36.thumb.jpeg.49fcd34cc509193e52474279236a648e.jpeg

Growmac, would you by any chance have anything from Towtrust confining your towbar would fit back in the day?

I've found a couple of places that are willing to fit subject to confirmation from Towtrust that iy will physically fit.

Like you I have no real need to tow but really need to be able to fit a bike rack that way.

Hi Mark, Lou,

Err, I don't I'm afraid. I do have a TowTrust bar fitted to my 7.0 R Estate for the last five years though, so can confirm it definitely does fit. It's all coded too, so the reversing sensors and drive modes know when the electrics are connected. I'm pretty sure there are photos earlier in this thread.

In the UK it's completely legal to use the bar to mount a bike rack, it would be illegal to tow on a public road, and your insurance would be invalid. I have it declared as a modification on my insurance, it generally either makes no difference or reduces the cost very slightly.
