What have you bought for your 8/8.5R?

They are an official accessory and the dealer fit price of £303 on a factory order is very good as the parts price from VW dealer for these is £270. My guess is that perhaps fitting to an existing car might be a different price.

The fitment of them is actually very easy - two T10 screws to remove, one electrical connector to disconnect and there is one clip at the middle bottom that needs to be unclipped and then they come straight out. Refitting is the reverse process and is very easy. The difficult bit is removing bits to get to the indicators - (note the OSRAM OEM kit comes with prretty good fitting instructions which show you how to remove mirror glass and mirror cap). The mirror glass is not to bad just nerve wracking. My advice here is to follow the OSRAM instructions as they show pulling at the top middle which is what I did with my trim removal tool. You are pulling on the glass which is supported by the mirror holding mechanism so it is strongest here. I would advise against pulling on the thin end of the mirror glass or on the corners. or twisting the tool when pulling.

The mirror caps are then tricky to remove but the worst part I found was getting the passenger side back on. Ideally you need a second pair of hands to push the mirror cap back whilst you guide the clips to latch.

Decided to tackle the carbon fibre mirror caps and dynamic LED mirror indicators today.

These are the carbon fibre mirror caps bought from Autoid.

They have the correct Lane Assist cutouts.

Quality and finish is good - made in China with VW part numbers on them.

These are the Black Edition Osram Dynamic LED mirrors indicators which are supposedly available exclusively from VW although I think a VW parts guy is selling some on Ebay.

They have a smoked darkish lens when compared to the original ones.

Trim tool set was brought into action - the best tool to use was the fourth down from the top on the rignht hand side.

I watched lots of youtube videos prior to get some idea as to various ways of doing it.

I taped the mirror up with masking tape and did the passenger side first - lowered mirror to point to the ground and inserted trim tool at top and then levered it out without twisting the tool. You have to exert quite a force and it is somewhat nerve wracking.

The mirror popped out eventually  and then remove the old mirro caps, removed the old LED indicators and rfeitted the new Dynamic ones plus the new carbon fibre mirror caps.

The LED fitment is easy - just be careful not to drop the small T10 screws into the mirror mechanism.

Refitting the mirror caps is not so easy. You really have to push them into place and even so the clips do not engage all that easy.

after much effort I got it fitted

The drivers side was easier in terms of fitment but I encountered another problem there. When I reassembled everything the mirror movement mechanism did not work properly. Ended up taking things apart and the problem was when you adjust the mirror to down position and then re-insert the mirror glass you can push the mechanism out of synch. The cure is to forcibly re-centre the mechanism and then reassemble everything. Once that was done the mirror worked fine.

The carbon fibre mirrors and Black Edition dynamic LED indicators do look much more in keeping with the Black roof - overall pleased with the end result.

Could you tell me which Carbon fibre ones did you get from Autoid? They’re selling one set at £249 and another set at £125, and did they fit exactly like originals. Cheers

I got the £125 set from Autoid - the passenger side was a real pain to fit - the drivers side went on much easier. Fitment wise the drivers side is perfect - the passenger side is nearly perfect just a slight difference of a mm or so on the inner bottom edge all other sections are aligned. The only other difference you might notice is the Lane Assist cutout is very slightly recessed on both sides rather than being perfectly flush as it was on the OEM Silver ones. Most people would not notice but I tend to have a keen eye for such things.

Thanks for info. I must admit I do like the carbon fibre covers👍🏻

just get dealership to fit them (and order them in)

Should you choose otherwise, just know it is really not a big job.

I didn’t do it, but I did take them out to replace the puddle light, so basically did the whole process bar unplugging the old one and plugging in the new one.

I know, and I’ve done stuff like this before on previous cars, but sometimes I do go for the easy, if not cheapest, option of paying someone else to do it. 🙂

Mine were £98.99 delivered from LEDPerf. Main dealer has quoted me 1 hour labour to fit so should be sub £300

Yep - the White Edition ones which are the ones you have got are available from quite a few outlets including LEDPerformance at a much cheaper price than the Black Edition. According to Osram, VW are the only distributor for the Black Edition.

see here https://www.osram.co.uk/ecat/LEDriving DMI for VW Passat B8-LED Dynamic Mirror Indicator-Car lighting-Automotive/gb/en/GPS01_3196770/ZMP_4060053/

The only other place I found which had the Black Edition ones for sale was a VW Parts guy on Ebay and I posted a link to this seller earlier in this thread. He was asking £200 for a set. I don't do Ebay so VW dealer it was for me.

I got the “black edition” ones on eBay. Much cheaper than the dealers. Here - https://www.ebay.ie/itm/404995278632?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=5282-175127-2357-0&ssspo=wdtYPdPTQPS&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=phSKMh8yQwS&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

seller was great, very helpful and responsive to me when I had one minor follow up query.

Fitting is very straightforward. I didn’t even take the glass out, managed to remove mirror caps without removing glass.

This is what I’m think lol, also they take the risk if crack mirror glass or snap clips  👍

True but that assumes they own up and fix the issue. Clearly a broken mirror glass would be fixed but other issues perhaps not. I have had more than a few cars in my time and the number of times I have found issues (like broken clips, improperly fixed connectors, bodged wiring etc is not insignificant. The advantage of doing it yourself is that you can ensure that everything is done correctly and there are no hidden mistakes.

Always a risk of that, over you doing it yourself, but sometimes it comes down to the individual dealership and also the relationship with them.  My dealership has previously owned up to damaging things in the process of fixing other things.  On my mk7, when sorting the infamous coolant leak, they damaged a headlight washer putting the front bumper back - they phoned me to tell me about the damage and that they had ordered the part and would replace it etc. When they did replace the headlight washer, they couldn’t get it to work, which was probably because I’d previously coded the headlight washers off with Obdeleven, and so I told them, they never made an issue of that.  I’d be ok letting them rot the indicators and going back to them if suddenly something wasn’t right.

I would agree that all dealers are not the same and it helps a lot if you build up a relationship with your chosen dealer. Aftersales servicing is a profitable activity for a dealer and it makes sense to keep loyal customers on side. As a customer it equally makes sense to keep going back to a trustworthy /good dealer too. I used to buy a lot of cars from Listers and because I knew a lot of the senior management team and service management got great service from them for VW, Audi and Mercedes.

I also get great service from my local BMW dealer as I have a long history with them. The local VW dealer seems ok.
