HTH Another compelling reason NOT to get a manual ASH
stu-evans
....... although a couple of weeks previously I had a oil top up light .... This will likely be your issue. If the top up light has come on you have less oil in than the minimum level of the dipstick. If it was run on this level at normal/high revs for any period of time, particularly if the oil was old (thicker), then you'll have starved the bearings of oil.I bought a TT cheap as a restoration for exactly this reason. Previous owner ran it until the top up light came on, 2 weeks later engine blew (big end bearings and turbo bearings).I imagine VW will say you should be checking oil regularly enough to top up before it reaches below minimum on dipstick. Blobby
isn't the oil level warning there for that exact reason? its the preventative measure before its to low to cause catastrophic failure else it would just say stop the car! as an example there will be lots of lady and men (not sexist) drivers that never check the level. the last 2000 miles its started to use oil this seems odd to me. as it did 35k without ever using a drop. Whats the point of a warning light if its too late?!

By the time the oil pressure light or red oil warning light comes on it's usually too late. You can mitigate the damage if you switch off immediately but there will still be some level of damage. If you ignore it, it will grenade itself very quickly.

Wasn't suggesting it should be ignored, just if damage is already done then its not much of a 'warning' light is it? More of a 'Car is FUBAR' light 😁

Ignition1
Good luck with VW - hope it works out, sounds like you'll have a strong enough case (I think). Enough arguing, letters, phone calls and suggestion of speaking to a lawyer (if it gets nasty) might help also. Regarding the oil light - the amber symbol is a warning, while red means stop driving immediately. I don't think because the amber light turned on, it means anything that happens to the engine from that point on is completely the driver's fault. Fair enough if the red light came on, but the amber warning is just that - a warning that something bad will happen if this continues. Provided you topped the oil up fairly quickly (I think "fairly" would be 1 to 2 days, or another 50 miles) then I don't think VW can use that as an argument against goodwill. brad7.5REST
Not trying to start something and I know it would be difficult to prove but did the last service garage put in the correct amount at oil? What does the oil look like that still in the engine? Did they in fact change the oil? Sent from my Lenovo YT-X703L using Tapatalk Jon R306 and The Doc
Blobby
No I fully appreciate your questions, car is currently on there ramps(under investigation) very nervous to hear the outcome. its a fully qualified garage an I have know the mechanic 10 years who only uses parts bought from vw. its no cheaper to go there just more convenient, the oil was blacker than I would of expected but thin so I was confident it had been changed the comment about quantity is unknown but too much would of resorted to a smoky engine/smoke out of the tailpipes or too little the low oil light would of come on. I had a thought that if when they plugged it in to cancel the "oil change required" they also deleted the low oil warning or is this not possible? I've had a garage not put enough oil in it the muppets. Wasn't 'White rose motors' in North London was it lol?
