It’s a shame the gearbox fault wasn’t happening when you took the car in.

If it had been present and they scanned the car I wonder whether they would have asked you to leave the car there?

It seems many folks are just telling the dealers who give the same response ie no fault found.

Thankfully from others on here the fault is known at VW GmbH !

You know the chances of an intermittent fault manifesting when you car goes into for diagnostics is a rare as the proverbial rocking horse poo Ian. 😄 Even if it had faulted in their presence I very much doubt they’d have kept the car in because at this time there is no fix.  They would have been able to send the fault info further up the line though.  When I experienced the paddle error, on doing an obdeleven scan afterwards, there was no fault logged.  Their ODIS report is consistent with that.  Whether or not it would be different if they’d had it happen and immediately scanned it is unknown.  I genuinely think the responses people are getting is because it does appear to be the case that the paddle error isn’t showing up as a logged fault.

Yes it is testament to @TheJetMan on here and some others that first encountered the issue and delved into it, that we are aware that VW Germany know about it and are working in it (allegedly) and much thanks goes to those who have brought it to everyone’s attention.  🙏

The fact that there is no error logged when the paddles do not work is informative. Assuming that error logging is implemented correctly this means that the software does not think there is an error. The most likely explanation for this is that the control software can under certain conditions enter a processing logic which does not monitor for interrupts on the paddles. If it is not monitoring for interrupts on the paddles then the paddles will not work and as it is not monitoring them it will not know they are not working so will not know that there is an error.

If a car that is experiencing this problem is attached to diagnostic equipment then it would prove this theory as you would be able to see the can bus traffic and see the interrupts from the paddles being used . I assume VW have the ability to put the car software into verbose logging mode in situations like this so that they can decode the control software to see where the problem lies and how it gets into this state.

Not at the dealership level. But certainly a dealer could check the measured value blocks for the paddle inputs and see if they are toggling on/off. As I’m assuming you can with OBDEleven too, but I’ve actually never checked MVBs with it myself. I was hoping someone would do that at some point when their paddles stop working, just to see.

Well, Rolf went in yesterday and they connected it up and checked everything... no obvious faults, though the car did log a Crash Protection activation twice.. hence the doors unlocking and windows coming down. There has been no technical bulletins or updates for the car so was nothing more they can do. They just said to monitor it and if it happens again get it back in for them to take a look and escalate further to VW.

Should we think about some sort of class action/complaint on this one?? 😆😆

One other pattern that I just realised is when I fill Rolf up, I use Esso and the app to pay, so I don't actually leave or lock the car, I stop the engine, open driver door and leave it open, then get back in and start up and drive away. Twice now the car did pingfest when I got back in..... anyone else getting that?

Could ? maybe …

Would ? I wouldn’t hold my breath

most shops just go through motions

not many of them really do forensic diagnostics

This is pretty much what my dealership have indicated for the UK, as opposed to say in Germany where diagnostics can have expert analysis etc.

My car went into my local dealership today for them to look into the paddle issue, and also the other multiple bongs I had a month back.

They did diagnostics and phoned my to update me afterwards.  The paddle issue has not logged a fault (which is consistent with the reports from others who’ve had their cars looked at for same issue) and unsurprisingly they couldn’t get it to replicate that issue today.  But it’s been noted that it has occurred which is really why it went in.

On dropping off the car this morning, I told them that I’d done a scan with obdeleven and had lots of faults logged (81), and no issue with that at all as expected. The ODIS scan also found lots of faults (67) and they were very happy giving me a copy of the report at my request.  Despite lots of logged faults they found nothing to cause a specific issue, and the car is running fine.  They did check against TPIs, and there is a TPI that states to ignore these faults.

I did mention in passing, the forum (well John’s ) ‘smoking gun theory’ that the multiple warnings incidents (just a single one in my case) have been experienced by those that downloaded the Dynamic Lighting Trial (and AirConsole in my case) from the Shop.  I think they thought it could be plausible, but it’s an unknown of course.

As usual, the service I received, the care of the car, and their willingness to listen and to honor my requests was really good.  I know dealerships vary greatly, but this is a good one ime.  Credit where it’s due.   Always have a good chat with them and they themselves say that enthusiasts often know a lot more about their cars than dealerships and they themselves learn things from owners.  Good bunch!

Hey how did you get you're obdeleven to work on the 8.5R as I've tried on mine and always say turn ignition on try again can't get it to connect??? But connects straight away to my Mark 8 R????

I haven’t had any connection issue connecting OBDeleven to my car, other then having to re-enter the cars VIN last time I used it.   But other forum members are/were having connection issues.  Have a look at the posts in this same thread from page 46 onwards.

I don’t know if you read the posts about lifetime membership.  If you have a lifetime membership (which some of us that had an original OBDeleven dongle have) then you only need to buy the next generation dongle, no need for the Pro annual subscription as your lifetime membership should work.  Just need to register with your existing details.
