I feel quite proud of that huge number 😂

Hmmm......... it must be something in the water in the land of King Chuck!!! 😀

With the deepest respect - I politely suggest that you consider a different metric when defining your self-image! Maybe personal attributes like empathy, generosity, eloquence, elegance , philanthropy, tolerance, EQ .....etc - a large portion of which I suspect most Poms already have?

@dv52

It’s the handicap principal …

One who has 81 codes and sleeps just fine at night.

Must be a true hero 🙂

Vanquishing their OCD with such confidence.

You love for yourself is stronger than your need to justify your purchases

That is the only thing needed to switch from “it has more memory and a better camera and it costs less”-droid to the holy grail of self indulgence that is the “me, myself and I, phone”

You know what they say about pride, coming before a fall. Or to quote the biblical source “Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall"

I’m waiting for the cliff void to swallow me and the car. 😂

I think many of us Poms posses a number of those attributes (to greatly varying degrees), but I suspect the people who posses all of them might be much less common.

It is rather concerning that we now seem to have at least 3 posters who have had incidents of bong fest for no apparent reason with as yet no explanation as to why these bong tests happened. Engine management lights coming on for no discernible reason too.

We also have the manual paddles gremlin which is also still unresolved.

In a lot of these error situations, it also appears that errors are not recorded in the diagnostic memory which to be frank (not earnest) is amateur hour in terms of software development. It is standard practice in software development that one of the very first things you do when encountering an error is to log the error so that it can provide assistance in troubleshooting after the event.

Rebecca:  The diversion into the realm of biblical writings is a tad off-piste and if the heading of this tread had a religious bent, I would relish the opportunity for an enlightened debate on this best-selling book.

However, because you have been able to quote Proverbs 16:18 with such precision - I'm guessing that you have faith. Alas, I do not (I call myself a born-again agnostic). Don't get me wrong - I envy those that have faith. I'm just unwilling to pay the high-price that the deity extracts for believing in her!!

So my (hopefully not disrespectful) suggestion is that a guaranteed way to avoid the "cliff void" is to join the ranks of us non-believers (it doesn't exist if you don't believe)!

As for your comment about Poms (incidentally, I'm not a Pom)- my experience with your fellow countrymen down here in the Antipodes is that they are a fairly good bunch (generally). Now, given that Australia is the only country where having convict ancestry is desirable, maybe  our native-Poms are a better class because of their heritage? 😄

Anyhow, 81 x DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) on a SCAN report for a car that hopefully was still under warranty  is an achievement to be proud-of - I guess !!

Do not fear Don, my accurate quoting of the source of the common saying, comes not from a religious leaning or directly from the bestselling chunky tome, but from the bestselling search engine.  I am simply aware that many of these 'sayings' stem from proverbs in the big book.

As the product of a catholic father and a jewish mother, the consequence is that I have long embraced a state of agnosticism.  As did my father - although he still felt the need to ensure his four daughters spent every childhood Sunday at a big house with a big cross on its facade.  Much later in life he told me he never believed in God himself but felt some kind of obligation to see that his offspring should be versed in such things.  Either that; old habits die hard or he was just plain sadistic. Thanks Dad! (RIP). 😂

I still have the occasional dream about making up sins I hadn't committed as a young child, just so I would have something to talk about in the confessional booth with a man who insisted I call him "Father" even though he wasn't my father.

I have also long assumed you a not a Pom Don. My use of "us" was in reference to us brits here, not your Anitpoden self. 🙂  I'm saying nothing of the convict heritage of your kin.   I once upset my Aussie friend by jestingly referring to Kiwis (not the fruit) as posh Australians.  It's been 20 years and I'm not sure she has forgiven me for that.

As for my pride comment over 81 faults (a record for any car of mine), I'll simply say that sarcasm is my bent and quite a lot of what comes out of my mouth or typing fingertips (in this case) is just that.

But on the point of the faults, the car is going to the dealership next Thursday to be prodded and poked.  Despite the fault report, driving wise (paddle issue aside) at the moment, all is well and no errors since the multi-bong experience.   The car is still under warranty as it is only 5 months old.

I will report back on what the dealership says although I suspect it will be the usual response.

Guys,

Just to reaffirm, VW are well aware of the issues with the shift paddles not working and VW Germany are in the process of coming up with a fix. I have a case open with my dealer and have a contact within VW Germany itself who are both saying as soon as a fix arrives, they will let me know and give me a reference number that you can all quote to your dealer. Just hold in their guys, the end is near!!!

Good stuff.... I came back on here to see if anyone had managed to get it fixed yet, I've heard nothing so far.

WoW - me too!! I went through a terrible ordeal as a child reaching the age of reason and coming to terms with my conversion to agnosticism (it was actually atheism at the time). I have Italian heritage - so very catholic family (I could even recite the mass in Latin!!). I decided then to NEVER put a child of mine through the same experience. I'm happy for children to become believers - but not until they are beyond the age of reason (else religious teachings simply become indoctrination for infantile minds)!

hmm......... almost sacrilege!! I hope you have apologized profusely and showered her with lots of very expensive gifts as atonement for your applauding faux-pas 😉

My practice in these cases is to advise the dealer that I expect to be given a copy of the ODIS report when I return to collect the car.

If the process in UK is the same as down-here, the dealer's de-brief is little more than a tortured-smile and perfunctory advice that everything is OK. Having access to the information in the ODIS report can tell an entirely different story about the real situation!!

I suggest that you do the same! If you advise the dealer when you drop-off the car about the ODIS report - you can be assured that when you collect the car, the representative will be much better informed (because he will expect that you will ask questions). Plus, if the master-tech knows that you will be given a copy of the ODIS report, he will try harder to make sure that it is error free!! And finally, when you read the ODIS report, make sure that the VIN aligns with the car VIN!

I always like to extract the most value from EVERY encounter with a dealer - I have paid the dealer a large amount for the privilege of these warranty visits, so I like to squeeze his family jewels as hard as possible !!

Good advice!

Here in NAR, the ODIS report is called “the GFF”. GFF = guided fault finding. Grammatically it doesn’t make sense, but it’s just what seems to be used.

Is it the same in Australia?

Don’t they use VAS in Australia ?

I think they do so in UK and EU.

I thought ODIS is only for non VW shops

where they can pay for access to the mother ship

so they can serve group cars better

No, I believe all dealers now use “ODIS-S”. No one has used VASPC in a long time.

Independents have full ODIS-S. Over here though, independents only get Erwin access where dealers have ElsaPro or Elsa2Go. But that’s the back-end for recalls, build info, PR-codes, etc.

At the manufacturer level they have ODIS-E, the Engineering version of ODIS.

@dv52 or anyone, please correct if I’m wrong with what I’ve written above. I’ve certainly scanned European cars (in Europe and imports in NAR) with ODIS-S and E with no issue to get coding/adaption values for retrofits so assumed it was the same system that was used worldwide.

@AHG and @blizzard60: OK, I hadn't expected this level of specificity - but I too am a self-confessed and proud pedant!

I guess that I used the term "ODIS" in my reply as a generic descriptor -I really didn't give it much thought. Of course we are all aware of ODIS and VAS as separate things in the the world of diagnostic devices.

However, in the specific world of VAG and when used in the context of describing the dealer tool, my understanding of the difference between VAS and ODIS comes down to their roles in Volkswagen Group diagnostics as follows:

  • VAS (Vehicle Analysis System) refers to the hardware used for dealer diagnostics. Examples include VAS 5054A and VAS 6154B, which act as interfaces between the vehicle and the diagnostic software (which sits behind the master-tech's machine).
  • ODIS (Offboard Diagnostic Information System) is the software that runs on a computer and communicates with the vehicle via a VAS interface. It enables stuff like fault detection, coding, programming, and security-related functions.

Now, this is how I use these two terms here in the land down-under (where women glow and men chunder 😉).  I don't claim to know how these two terms are used up there in countries where water spins in the opposite direction in a drain - so I apologize for any confusion!!

Great info. It makes lots of sense, as I saw VAS written on both cart-carried and stationary system they use for diagnostics and calibrations at the shop.

I though ODIS was the alternative for indi shops assuming they get a different tool than dealer shops (and pay for it) as they can’t initiate warranty work or order parts directly from Germany etc., like a dealer shop.

Now I see I was half right (same tool, different version - E vs S) but my nomenclature was off. Thank you.

I was waiting for an opportunity to quote Men at Work 🙂
Love the smart and subtle wording on that song
Isn’t it plunder when the women’s glow and chunder when the beer flows ? or was it a joke that I ruined ?

It is definitely a VW related song

with a fried-out Kombi on the first verse

(transporter, I think we called them)
