Diagnostic help required - speed sensor issue
mustard replied to banana_man's topic in VW Golf R MK7 Chat
Did you buy genuine Speed Sensors? I bought one from a well-known spares retailer, and it gave me exactly what you described: fine for a while and then lots of warnings. In the end, I went and got one from VW, (second mortgage), since then no issues -
A few weeks ago, I returned to my car to find an error message stating that the ACC was inoperative. On checking, I found that somebody had attempted to steal it. I guess they might have been disturbed as they had managed to remove it from its bracket, but did not get away with it. However, it still cost me nearly £400 to get it repaired and recalibrated. I looked at ways to prevent it in the future, or at least to make it more difficult. My son, who is into 3D printing, made up a cover that fits over the sensor and is fixed to the grill, currently with cable ties, but he wants to develop a more secure way of fixing it. It has quite an OEM look and only time will tell if it is effective.

Just had a quick check on Euro Car Parts, the two sensors are around £300 for the pair, and judging by my local dealer, they probably are charging an hour's labour for the £450
-
Yes I had to, driver's door, roughly £160 by the VW dealer

Years ago, the thinking was that spacers put extra strain on wheel bearings as they moved the axis of suspension away from what was designed, nobody seems to be worried about this any more, so I wonder if it is a problem

Not sure on the legality of replacing HIDs with LEDs, it is illegal to put LEDs in place of Halogen bulbs, in short that is because the bulbs need to be 'E marked' and the legislation that covers that is written for filament bulbs. Is it legal to replace halogen with LED bulbs? - Ask the Car Expert
-
I fitted Osram Xenarc Nightbreaker Laser D3S to mine, a great improvement but still could do with a bit more light at times. The D3 bulbs are not the best, I remember a company that does a conversion using higher power bulbs, but can't find them.
-
The only LED replacements I have seen, replaced the Mk7 Standard halogen headlamps.

I have formatted my card in the past, the files that are unique to the Sat Nav are hidden, so should still be there, Did you use FAT32 or NTFS as the format protocol?. NTFS allows for a slightly larger file, which I used as FAT only gave me a 13GB card and the file was 14/15 GB, although now VW have reduced the Europe file to allow the 13GB card to be used. Suggest you try a reload of the map, if that doesn't work reformat and use the DiscoverCare software, it is slower, but I have found it more robust.

There is no separate bulb for Main Beam, there is a shutter that comes down to create the Dipped Beam pattern, if there is no change, then the shutter is at fault.

Here is the McGard site where you can order the correct bolts: https://mcgard.com/automotive/wheel-locks/bolt-style/

Indicator and fuel cap lock issues???
mustard replied to FantasticMidget's topic in VW Golf R MK7 Chat
Poor earth connections often give warnings, if I understand correctly both Indicator and Fuel Cap are in the same area. -
GOLF R DRL DAY TIME RUNNING LIGHTS/ TURN SIGNAL ISSUES
mustard replied to Bav's topic in VW Golf R MK7 Chat
A lot of time where there are intermittent flickering of lights, it is down to corrosion on terminals or on older cars a poor earth -
The Golf has an intelligent charging system, so you need to connect one lead to the battery post and the other to the metal tag on the other end near the bulkhead, so that the system knows the state of charge of the battery. I don't lock the car in the garage, but simply put the bonnet down loosely.
-
Even the same type of battery should really be coded as the Golf has intelligent charging and adjust the amount of charge depending on the sate of the battery, however it is not intelligent enough to know when a new battery is fitted so will continue to put the same amount of charge in thinking it still has the old battery, shortening the new battery's life by overcharging it . I once had a battery explode as it was overcharged and boiling away all the electrolyte, an old Mini with the battery buried in the boot and the curious electromechanical regulator.

It was Gatwick VW in Crawley, changed their name now, they wanted £99 plus parts, which I seem to remember was around £15-£20

Surprised as my Main Dealer readily agreed to clean the gauze on my car, albeit they insisted on replacing all the caskets which pushed up the cost. They did maintain that it is not a filter and not on VW's service schedule, but carried out the work nevertheless.

I have been looking at getting this one, more OEM than some: MAXTON DESIGN LTD - REAR VALANCE VW GOLF R MK7 (2013-2016)

Fronts are already at the legal limit for visibility

I had a problem with mine from the beginning, sometimes they would work, but often not. The dealers said "they just need priming". Last time it went in they had to remove the bumper to 'cure' the thermostat leak and guess what, they discovered that the pump was fault and both washers need to be replaced. At first they expected me to pay, over £200, but fortunately I had taken up their 'All in plan', so was covered. Now they work all the time.
-
My car went in to the dealer to have a smart repair to the bumper, I got a call to say there was a problem with the washer pump, the headlight washers, and oh, by the way you have a coolant leak from the thermostat. Fortunately all the repairs covered by the All In Cover I bought, best £33 a month I have spent.

What do people do for winter wheels and tyres
mustard replied to David Bennett's topic in VW Golf R MK8 Chat
I got some BBS CH wheels (second-hand) and Nokian Winter tyres. Not strictly needed in the South East, but as our daughter lives in Denmark, they are compulsory from Nov to March there, so worth having. There is also a gradient and a sharp turn at the end of our road, which when we last had any significant snow presented some challenges get out onto the main road for those on ordinary tyres. -
VW have some software called 'Discovercare' which will install the updates on your card, it also allows you to make a backup of the current file. Woks OK, not the best software, but I have used it roughly every 6 months and never had any issues.

The battery in my R lasted just over 5 years, I don't do many miles so it sits in the garage for sometimes weeks at a time, but never had any issues starting until earlier this year, I also have a 14 year old Touran, and only changed the original battery a year ago.
