R usage

I just see my R as a daily workhorse to stick 24K on in 2 years.   I really should take pride in it.

Nothing wrong with that.  If I had to drive daily it would be my R.

Some folks are focusing on 'weekend car'.  I didn't purposely buy it as a weekend car, it just so happens I don't need to drive daily which is why it rarely moves in the week.  It's a great car that does everything well and I'm keen to minimise any negative impact from it sitting idle on my driveway Mon - Fri.

Do you reckon this is bad for its wellbeing and if so what to do? A quick run midweek perhaps? Anyone else in the same position with similar concerns? Does anyone use a car cover in the winter months? (I don't have a garage)

No probably not.  Absence from driving it is probably worse for your own well being!

My R is my daily 15 mile commute and I feel 'compelled' to drive it each weekend.

Its the best daily IMO, what more do you want, its rapid and you can still get great MPG at the same time. I heard the new RS3 is pretty good also, and gives good MPG when not flooring. I also love going out for the weekend drives/shopping trips with the missus and baby in the R. I would prefer something else for the weekends and have the R for as my daily obviously, but the golf is good for me at the moment, plus this clio is there to offset mileage/short trips. once the clio is gone I cant start planning and budgeting at a proper weekend car lol, i may have to sell the R, and get a cheap dail though which wont be good.

Perfect combo for me is R daily, and what a daily that is. And C63 or TTRS or something juicy with 400-500 plus bhp

I don't class my R as a daily, purely because I don't use it for commuting to work. Sometimes I don't drive it for a week and other times I drive it every day. People say its not really a weekend car and I agree to an extent, if you had access to another car and the R was solely for weekend fun then maybe it isn't special enough, or has enough fun factor for that.

I wanted a performance car, but also something that has 4 seats and is practical. The R does everything for me and on the weekend when I want to let my hair down over the moors, it surely hasn't failed to put a smile on my face in the 16 months of ownership as of yet.

Amen to that

My 7.5R is my daily... I'm looking at 12k a year, and I use her for my commute, my midnight play drives, my runs to the shops, and my runs to the track. It's a VW at the end of the day, second only to Volvo in their workhorse nature. They don't break, they will run like new after 150k miles, and they'll be as fun as they were coming off the factory floor. My brother in law has a 2001 1.6 TSI with nearly 300k on the clock and had very little done, it occasionally dumps oil like a drunk ordering a drink, and the arches look like Mickey Rourkes cheeks, but she feels great when oil is at a suitable level and still feels nimble and suitably fun, still rocking.

This said, in about two months mine will be garaged and bled of oil and fuel to be a trailer riding track monster when I swap to either a Hilux or Ranger for my 'daily' drive when we move to Scotland.

Mines sits on the drive doing nothing really apart from an occasional shopping trip for 5/6 months of the year because I use my motorcycle for commuting and trips out from April-Oct(ish) depending on the weather. However, in those other months I really rack up the miles.

It's worth taking it for a quick spin every so often, but I personally don't bother with a car cover at any point as it makes it even less likely that you'll spontaneously decide to take it out for a blast.

Mine is my daily driver but all depends on my work at any time.

Some weeks i’m working from home so may get used for local trips only

Other weeks i’m in the office so using at weekends only for a mix of local trips and a 200 or 300 mile trip to see one of my kids

Other week’s i’m somewhere longhaul for business all week so it wonders where I am

Been this way for years and never had a problem with any cars, probably as mixed pattern so not sitting doing nothing all week.

IMO cars are OK as long as they get a decent run at least once a fortnight, although once a week is probably better.  That way the battery is kept charged up, all fluids are run at operating temp for a while, any condensates are burnt off from the engine oil, and all seals etc are also kept flexible.

Of course it is better for any vehicle to be garaged rather than being out in the weather, but a car cover is better than nothing (but watch out for marring of the paint if placed on or removed from a dirty car).

My transporter van often goes a fortnight between runs as I mainly use it for going to dog Agility Trials.  I've had it for 12 years and done 185,000Km so far, with no problems I'd blame on intermittent use.

I have friends with classic cars and the odd garage queen, they have battery conditioners and change fluid regularly, the cars hardly move from October - April and they have other vehicles for everyday. Having said all that a Golf R is a strange choice of a car to keep that way as it is great in all weather's & conditions...

Sounds like a dream lol, and yes agree Golf is a strange one for that. Even a Audi RS model I wouldn't consider great for weekends as they can be used daily, especially the new ones. I often see quite the same few RS6 drivers always in theirs, The old RS4 or something then yeah it would a weekender, or in the garage.

Mechanically, don't worry about the mid week drive - oil (even synthetic) will remain on engine components for that long... A month or so would be a Max limit I'd consider, then get it out for a solid run!
Battery conditioner as mentioned before is an excellent idea for the longer waits, and consider raising the vehicle off it's tires for the longer rests.
Protect any rubbers (as we ALL should) with a conditioner of some sort - silicone spray or similar.
Fuel stabiliser for the long waits and if you can't burn it off in a month or so otherwise.
Replace the oil at the yearly interval regardless of low mileage. Replace the remaining fluids at their TIME interval as well - ignore the low mileage.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head...
