What non-performance enhancing mods have you done to your R 2?

Spent this afternoon installing a secondhand boot mounted Helix DSP/Sub. I was a bit underwhelmed by the standard audio set up and had seen good reports of the Helix "Plug & Play" units, including the spare wheel well version, but I wasn't keen on losing the spare. It turns out that the boot version I wanted is not available new from VW anymore so I bought a used one off ebay complete with loom. There was a bit of toing and froing with the vendor when the plug which re-routes the un-pinned cables from the block connector in the back of the glovebox CD unit into the Helix loom was found to be missing, but he came up trumps and posted me the offending article the next day. Otherwise, it was like new bar a few marks on the Helix badge.

After viewing a couple of YouTube videos and removing the trim under the doors and up the A pillar on the passenger side to route the loom and changing some of the wiring as mentioned, I had the job done in less than three hours. The vendor (anyone on here?) had a dongle and programmed the box for the Golf 7 four door and the jumper for right-hand drive was in-situ on receipt. Only thing missing was the 'shorting plug' which goes into the boot end of the Molex connector on the Helix loom so you can revert to the basic sound set up should I need to take the sub out to carry bigger loads. I have ordered a new one from a specialist.

So, what's the verdict? I have to say I am very impressed, it really makes a massive improvement to the basic set up. The most marked aspect for me was not the much-improved bass from the two modest subs in the box (no need from my perspective to have it pushed up the scale on the mixer anymore) but the much more enveloping soundstage and the undistorted mid and treble audio quality from the DSP.  It would seem to me that the standard speakers are more than up to the job.

If anyone else buys a second hand one (boot or spare wheel), this is the connector that you need make sure is included to get the power into the Helix loom for the DSP/Amp.

Added MK8 R Style blindspot indicators.

They work well and can be seen much easier than the indicators in the glass.

The silver finish appears good quality for an aliexpress special.

Wasn't easy to fit as the clips are very fragile but so are the oem so i resorted

to removing the front of the wing mirror which was just two screws and that made

it much easier.

Great addition to the mk7/7.5.  The side assist is one of the best driver aids on the mk8 imo.

FWIW I posted my blind-spot system a while back. It includes a l.e.d. for Left & Right on the dash hump in front of the steering wheel.

Parts cost (from memory) ~ $30 Australian, some simple soldering was required. No cpu settings required to enable.

Took advantage of the Maxton flash sale a couple of weeks ago & bought a rear defuser.

Very easy to fit, I used 3m VHB tape along with two flat head torques screws hidden at the back for extra security .

It doesn't look to excessive IMO, almost OEM+ , the true OEM+ test is if the wife doesn't notice 😄

Just finished reading the first non-performance thread! Excited to see there is a second, will get a litre of coffee and get comfy to read through.

I will take some pics of my car and bits, but so far, I have done the following for mine.

1) full rebadge (rear, side and front badges)
2) body colour wing mirror caps
3) silver dial knobs for climate control and radio
4) a set of custom fitted leatherette/vinyl mats that completely cover the floor of the car - makes cleaning way easier with two messy kids. Was unsure about this order but it does the job perfectly for me.
5) rgm boot lip protector and side sill protectors - black vinyl, doing a mega job of protecting from child vandalism
6) front seat back protectors which also have loads of storage
7) vw brand double usb charger
8) bonnet release ties

Soon to be done:

8) roof rail wrap in black
9) smoked tint on rear lights (white strips only)
10) some silver/aluminium trim bits and bobs for the interior
11) Bosch areo wipes
12) armrest storage
13) steering wheel re-trim
14) dsg paddles
15) mudguards front and rear
16) 17inch rse05 wheels
17) longer length under tray for bit of extra protection of sump and other gubbins underneath

(Plus a pedal box, sorry, know I shouldn’t mention that here!)

I honestly didn’t give a monkies about any of this stuff on any prior car but reading these forums is dangerous!
