Tragedy.... developing news.

Really is sad, and RIP to the people in the people carrier.

Why is it always the way that the scum survive (in this case with a few cuts and bruises) and the poor people just minding there own business tragically loose there lives. Seems so unfair.

The scum will be out in no time, I like the idea of them working to pay the family, I really do think people in prison for petty crimes (I do not rank this as a petty crime), have to do litter picking etc to pay the fines.

maybe its isn't a bad thing when we are all driving milk floats.

One thing that I do not understand, and to be quite frank, think is ridiculous about the justice system.

Say if these cretins get 20 years, they'll be out in 10. Why half the sentence for good behaviour? It's almost in their favour especially with the way prisons are these days. I may be wrong about exactly half of the sentence, but regardless, reducing it for good behaviour shouldn't happen.

RIP to the family who were involved. I saw a post about it this morning, guy in his 30s with 3 kids. Terrible

Just read the story in link above. Couldn’t believe the statement from the cop:

“Since the recent death of their aunty, the brothers have been displaying a far more reckless side to their personalities. They are both understandably affected by her untimely death and they require support, which my team and South Yorkshire Police’s partner agencies can offer.”

Their “aunty” - for gods sake, these are two criminals not 3 year old little kids

”support” - again, sod support, lock them up

Just starting to get their defense sorted. Mitigating circumstances..... I hope they get 10 years minimum but I doubt it. Few years with good behavior

I think it's a foregone conclusion that the car was stolen, early media photos showed a number plate which a member on the uk mk7 Golf forum has confirmed is his number but not his car. Sentences for this kind of crime need reviewing with some serious minimum terms whether it results in a loss of life or not, theft aside, driving in such a manner such be comparable with carrying a loaded gun . Would it stop it ? No, but it would keep repeat offenders out of the way for longer.

I have a better way of keeping repeat offenders out of the way.........for good.........

One of the first jobs I had in the forces was taking a prisoner to Colchester Military Prison..........that’s enough to put people off crime for good.........no single cells and no tv or games consoles.......and all the phys and domestic cleaning substances you could want.........

I believe the maximum sentence for death by dangerous driving is 14 years, lets hope the judge can stack a few other matters on top of this and the sentences run consecutively . They're clearly the scum of the earth.

The sentence must act as a deterrent to others - 14 years isn't sufficient.

Correction to my previous post : As of earlier this year death by dangerous driving can now carry a life sentence, previously it was 14 years.

In 2016, 157 people were sentenced for causing death by dangerous driving and 32 were convicted of causing death by careless driving whilst under the influence.

I'm not convinced long sentences act as a deterrent.  Irresponsible, impulsive thugs don't think about the consequences of getting caught.   Lawbreakers who cause mayhem should be imprisoned for the protection of innocent citizens.  If that means long sentences, so be it.  Better than the revolving door policies we seem to pursue.  (I live in the States where it is much the same.)  But be mindful that locking people up and throwing away the key is an after-the-fact response that reflects societal failure to identify and address root causes of the problem.  Welfare of law-abiding citizens, which should be first priority, is compromised in perpetuity if all we do is enforce stiff sentences on perps after the crime is committed.
