Tyre Buying Guidance, Tyre Deals and Tips.

It is alarming how suddenly the performance of ultra low profile tyres drops away with Wear.  If you can buy Top tyres at a great price, it helps ease the pain of replacing well before they get near any “legal limits”.

An R deserves good tyres, as do you and your passengers.  This is exactly the motivation for starting this thread!  Unfortunately there are few Bargain Deals available at the moment.

Strange thing is the grip is still great in the dry, been on the web hunt for some new rubber yesterday evening - some bargains to be had I’ve noticed though, Contis around the £130 mark at the moment which I think is decent. Same tyre size on my old car and they were around the £160 mark at that point

Sorry I wasn’t clear. I meant there didn’t seem to be any outstanding offers at the minute for some reason. But the online prices are still cheaper than dealer or just tipping up at a Tyre Outlet.
(😂I get the same when I’m buying Wine or Beer!  Always need to keep a balanced sense of proportion!😂)

That’s great, many thanks for your help Booth emoji1303.png

Only thing I would add is that just to confuse further with all the variants, you can also get the Conti 5P with or without a rim protector. The ones factory fitted on the R are without ;as in pic above). I had ones with a rim protector on my GTI and bizarrely found the ones without to give better rim protection!  But to me that’s down to the Pret wheel being slightly more inset that the near flush diamond cuts I had on the other car.

It’s fine, I realised what you were trying to say

What a minefield , thanks again for your help. Is there an easy way of knowing which has the rim protector and which doesn’t ? On my old car I’d always buy a tyre with rim protection as that had 19s too, I’ll have a look at the version without this time I think

Checking an old invoice the Audi version with rim protector is denoted with the code R02.  HTH

I guess it depends what’s already on your R as if you’re only replacing the fronts, you’ll likely want to match them up?  The Conti 5P with rim protector have a noticeable turned out lip opposed to the ones in the pic above.

Not just with wear.  I've noticed a significant reduction in wet road grip just from 3 years of age on PS4 (not PS4S) tyres even though they still had 90% tread depth.  I once had some old tyres (7yrs+) on a v8 Holden ute I used infrequently, and it was diabolical in the wet (too much power, no weight in the back, very little grip = oversteer anytime).  These days I replace any tyres more than 5 years old, regardless off tread depth.

Yes Greg, Agree with you. Maybe ? even more of a problem in Australia’s sunshine?  But yes, this is frequently overlooked.   We’ve had cracking (wrinkling) to Tyre walls in well under 5 years, part age and part possible under inflation I think!   I’m still into Life Long Learning.😂

That’s great, thank you. Yes, that’s my plan, to match them up. I’ve washed mine this morning and noticed the AO on the side wall

I finally bit the bullet and got PS4S's last week.  What a difference.  My tyres were near the limit, so much more confidence now.  They just grip and grip.  I bought them from Protyre who had a fitting place near me.  They were £620 😣 but protyre/michelin are doing £100 cashback when you upload your receipt. My cashback got confirmed yesterday thankfully.  I've just been on the protyre site and they only seem to be showing PS4 at the moment for some reason.

Anybody know of any offers on 19" MPS4S at the moment?

Looks like £160 a corner and no discounts for multiple at Blackcircles

I told my local VW dealer the Blackcircles price as the car is there for some warranty work and they are getting a price but am certainly not holding my breath on that one

Hi Chris

Best I could find is £150.99 a corner:

https://www.asdatyres.co.uk/235-35-19?speed=y&load_index=91&brand=michelin

This is an 'all in' price including disposal

They seem to use various different fitment centres around me (Protyre, MCCONECHYS and some Indy's)

HTH

When I had my MPS4S tyres fitted at Costco they filled them with pure nitrogen as standard but can't say I've noticed any difference.

Only issue is if you need to add air/nitrogen to your tyres to maintain pressure or for carrying a load.

Since ordinary air is 78% nitrogen I'm not sure its that important to be fair.

I suppose they should 'hold' pressure better?

Possibly not needed when daily driving but useful for temperature extremes or racing but probably not worth it for normal driving.

At less than 6 quid I supposed my question was it worth to use twice yearly (obviously in addition to regularly checks and adjustments)

I like anyone don't mind and regularly check my tyre pressures but if it means less trips to fill them up I would be happy with that as a benefit.

I have never been able to find a tyre pressure checker and inflator for home use that's of good quality and accurate that doesn't require a compressor.

Thanks
