For me the R400 would have been a much better effort for a special. Thought it was different enough from the standard R especially with the wider wheel arches and Recaro Wingbacks. A unique colour would have been better too.

They are having enough problems making standard cars, can you imagine how hard it would be with larger arches and big changes rather than just cosmetic?

It’s wiring looms and silicon chips holding builds back.

different body pieces would have little to impact on delivery times. Changing electronics would.

In these days of managing and reducing costs, its very unlikely VW would ever produce a limited number of bespoke body panel pressings for a low volume anniversary model. IMHO, that would never get signed off by the bean counters in VW’s Ivory Tower.

At best, I think all that could have been expected was a anniversary-specific badges, maybe different alloys and a few pieces of model-specific trim. It’s got the badges and carbon fibre trim and as for the alloys - at least there’s the blue option, along with blue door mirror caps 🤣.

I think you're grossly simplifying it. There isn't a chance in hell that VW were going to do a bespoke mass produced car, chip shortages or not.

But of course, the chip shortages do affect everything. So many things are indirectly affected by it. Different body panels would obviously require re-tooling... different tools, re-configured robots, new robots, reconfigured assembly lines, etc... There are plenty of electronics involved in setting all that up, all of which require parts that are in short supply!

they wouldn’t do based it on the figures. They wouldn’t sell enough to make the rnd costs back.

I seriously doubt theyd have to rebuild their production lines for slightly wider wheel arches.

Yes, very expensive and standard spec does not include leather and akrapovic amongst others.  I wonder when VWUK are going to launch it and what our standard spec and price will be?

I think VWUK would just like to get some of the backorder shifted.

Pretty soon they will face a growing new gripe - "where's my engine cover?"

No way would they produce cars with major changes needed to their production lines. Would need major reconfiguration of the line and supply chains for a small volume.

What do I know, only been in Ford, Vauxhall, BMW, Merc, VW, Audi, Kia, Hyundai and a few other production plants over the past few years 🤪

Yes expensive, PP and Leather is standard on the ED20, but Akra/DCC is not on the German configurator, I bought my fully loaded 1 year old 30% below new price 👍
