The Turbo Worry!

So in August I traded my Manual 7R in for a DSG one (65 plate with 23k on clock), I bought the DSG for many reasons but mainly due to wanting to take it to Stage 1. After doing lots of research now I am slightly hesitant :(

Would turbo failure be less likely on a car which has more miles problem free? I understand there is an issue with balancing but would this have become apparent earlier or are turbos still just as likely to blow on high miles - This goes for after going stage 1 too?

I currently have 722H

£1-2k is hefty (for me) so on one hand I'm thinking leave it but on the other I know there are many people out there running tunes with no issues whatsoever! A DSG map is definitely on there cards though without a doubt.

** PS apologies I know the turbo failure topic has been beaten to death 9 billion times **

Why not get your turbo stripped and rebalanced/upgraded, would be a lot cheaper than upgrading and would give you a bit of peace of mind, most tuners would be able to recommend someone I'm sure.

I may be on the hunt for a stage 1 tune in the new year so having the same concerns, not after huge power just better driveability and agree a DSG tune is a must

I have considered it but it’s all added cost which is pretty substantial plus time off the road while it’s being done.

Like yourself I’m not chasing big power so I’d be going with a tuner with more progressive maps which has to play a factor in reliability surely.

Turbo balancing is around £150 (plus costs for removal / refitting of the turbo).

You have to pay if you want to play. Once remapped, you will get zero goodwill from VW should the worst happen.

If balancing is causing issues, this may not be the only issue, as US based forums are reporting oil starvation issues as well.

Plenty of stage 1 / 2 2014 cars out there without issue. You ONLY hear about the handful of cases of those that do have issues.

Out if interest why is the DSG tune a must? For drivability or for improved clamping force? Is it not advised to go stage one without a dsg tune?

DSG map is good because it will sort out the shift timings which many find to be slightly late in S mode, going Stage 1 it’s advisable to manage any clutch slip (MK7).

What he said

Just couldn't imagine getting a stage 1 tune and not sorting out the DSG shift points as with just 2 modes one is too low and the other is too high imo

IMO the shift points in S on the DQ381 in the Mk7.5 aren't too bad (certainly way better than the DQ250 in the Mk7), unfortunately in D on light throttle it is way too keen to get into a high gear, to the point where it feels like the engine is lugging sometimes.

I've read that the DQ381 can handle the torque of a stage 1 tune without needing a TCU (and haven't read of anyone getting slip)

I have just purchased an uprated turbo for this reason. It’s pushed back the purchase and install of the remaps (ECU & TCU) but it will be worth it in the end.
It’s going to cost just under a £1k for the turbo including fitting.
My 2016 is fitted with a 722H but I just like to cross the “T’s” and dot the “I’s”. Do things properly and do it once. Not worth the risk.
But ETTO.

Good to hear definitely agree with doing it right with the turbo, I’ve decided against it for me and to stick to stock power as it’s not worth it for me plus the extra maintenance like servicing every 5k isn’t what I’m looking for right now, maybe in the future though.

Instead I’m going to spend the money on lowering the car and improving handling 😃
