Software & Hardware versions and updates

Thanks for your replies. I have read on another forum that 1896 is indeed not a prerequisite for the big OTA updates. One user reported receiving the OTA updates while being on 1890 as myself. I guess it is just a waiting game 🙂

After all the shenanigans i have had i feel the system is way more responsive than it was before the updates, it used to be sluggy with delays but now its pretty quick with what i press it to do!!

Only message i get everyday is No wi-fi connection to external Hotspot press here to connect to a mobile device... did not have that before . My mobile is connected

Ah ok, but i thought @Aidey had another major OTA after his dealer had updated his system to 1896 or maybe i have just read wrong?

Edit, and @aldfort?

The major OTA update came in 2 (large) parts. First part brought you to an intermediate version (A896) and 2nd part got you to the full 1896. There's been no other major updates after that. Just the usual small ones.

No data package for us. We were told about the 2 pending OTA updates when the car went for service and we got 1896 installed. I suspect 1896 is a pre-requisite for the OTA updates.

Ok she's back 😍

The update that i did at home was the culprit apparently , it did not install properly and killed the system, I was on 1804 , just checked the system and its now 1896

The salesman who brought it back said as he was driving it back another system update appeared, just had a look at that and i'm scared to press Update... its 908mb in size..

Sorry, but i am a bit confused (doesn't take

much 😉)

The above posts seem to imply that further major OTA update(s) occured after the dealer updated to 1896?

Yes that's how some of these posts read to me to, particulary @aldforts - as though the dealership has downloaded 1896 update and then there has been further OTA large file updates.  If that is the case, I wonder if that is something that was all done at the dealership until very recently but now VW have split it and push some through as OTA, although in some cases like @JoeGTI7 the whole update to 1896 has been OTA albeit it in 2 parts.

Ah ok, yeah, that would make sense as it seems that both times the dealer has warned of the impending OTA's.

I wonder, if this is the case, if both types of update are exactly the same?

The car got 1896 when it was serviced, this was a week or two ago.

When we got the car back the dealer told us there were 2 major OTA updates that were due to be released a few days later. The paperwork from the dealer confirmed this and gave the codes for the updates. Bang on time the first update arrived. After 48 hours the second one arrived.

In between the digital manual got updated twice and there were 2 minor updates. Lots of messages confirming successful updating as well. Car is relatively quiet now with no updates for the last 48 hours.

As has been said the major updates took a long time to download and you are warned the car will be unusable while they install. VW claim the install takes 30 mins for each update and the vehicle must be turned off with parking brake on.

Hope that helps.

It is mentioned on other forums and some people have had emails from VW explaining it. It might be to do with voice control. Despite not buying this our car responds to " hey volkswagen" we can then issue voice commands.

I received the email from WeConnect yesterday, which helpfully explains that their cars are like smart phones these days and sometimes will require OTA software updates... lol. And then it goes into several paragraphs explaining what to do when I get the upgrade notification. This is all 2 weeks after I've already installed said OTA updates.... helpful as ever VW!
