Or if close enough to the house simply connect it to my home WiFi to download when parked up? You dont need a data package for the OTA's, this is just for streaming. The intergated esim will still function for OTA's and other stuff like live map traffic updates/We Connect (Car comes with 3 years We Connect subscription) Edit, looks like @JoeGTI7 beat me to it 😉 egg
egg
Thanks both. Out of curiosity then, what happens when the 3 years weconnect runs out?

That’s a good point. It’s hard to know what the exact situation is. Might ask my dealership. jason1972

I suspect the We Connect app will stop working (if you use it) and the live map/traffic updates. Dont know about the OTA's, would hope they would still work, but i am sure there will be a constant nottifcation letting you know its expired and telling you to renew!!! egg

JoeGTI7
I would guess after 3 years you'll get a constant nag notification to pay up / re-subscribe.

If the data package trial notification is anything to go by, that’s a certain assumption. 😂 JoeGTI7 and jason1972
aldfort
Found some VW info that confirms you can skip these big OTA updates by pressing cancel when they are offered. However the impression we got was that they may be more up to date than the software issued to the dealers. It's worth a detailed read of the TPI thread to understand how the dealers get the software updates they apply to your car. We are also a year behind, it seems all ID models have been on this OTA process for a while.

NRW
Subscription Renewal time. I recently renewed subscription to Weconnect on my mk7.5 after reaching 3 yo. I do use some of the features it provides and find it quite useful. Although I do tend to prefer Google Maps/Waze for Nav…… but if another person (some small chance)is driving and , say, needs Nav or something urgently……then I’m erring on the cautious side. Cost £205 or so for a further 2 years (but man maths spent money saved on the All In agreement)😀 jason1972

Yes, possibly now major updates are available OTA, from this point on, the dealers may stop receiving any further updates and the latest will only be available OTA? Although I would think that the dealers must still have some kind of option to update in case the OTA process fails similar to what seems to have happened to @Aidey ? I think what those of us that have just recently been updated to 1896 by the dealer would like to know is if the current large OTA updates (whether delivered and applied while system is on 1896 or lower) takes the system to a newer state than what we currently have or exactly the same. I still suffer from slight flickering and sometimes black screen on the reversing camera and suppose I live in a slightly deluded hope that one day an update may properly rectify it (although with mine, it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s also related to hardware). I suppose time will tell when the next major update is released OTA and then hopefully everyone (who accepts the update) will be on the “same page”. Either way, in my opinion, the addition of now receiving any further major updates OTA is a big step forward as repeatedly taking the car to a dealer to have the software updated (and then finding it didn't fix what the TPI stated!!) was becoming ridiculous and frustrating. aldfort
Several days and several hundred miles under the wheels since the 2 OTA's and... Everything working pretty much as it should. Just occasionally the speed limit shows up wrong but as soon as the car sees an actual speed limit sign all is well. (I think it's a mapping issue with incorrect map data being used or it's just hanging on to the last image it captured of a speed limit sign and using that.) We don't use travel assist so don't allow the car to decide how fast we should be going. Not sure if this is relevant but using simple ACC the set speed shows up as a green dot on the speedo and the actual red dot showing the speed limit is not present. jason1972 and Booth11

I use the ACC with full travel assist and i no longer get the Red limit dot either. It disappeared a few updates ago, think on 1803 or what ever it was. Think i mentioned it in the Gremlins thread at the time. Dont know if it was intensionaly removed for some strange reason or just a another bug but its a shame as i liked it displaying. Maybe this is part of slimming down the software so as to ease processor load? Must admit we don't use cruise control much but we had some motorway miles to munch. Should have said, we got the e-mail about the OTA updates. It's issued direct from WeConnect HQ in Germany. We had pt 2 of the update some days before the e-mail! Massimo2323
This is the requirement for getting the OTA updates according to the TPI OUB8/OUB9: "For the customer to be able to carry out the over-the-air update in their MQB vehicle, the following requirements must be met: Vehicle must be enrolled (enrolled = We Connect contract must be active and a main user or Volkswagen ID must be assigned to the contract) Vehicle must have a main user Vehicle must not be in private mode" jason1972 and aldfort
