When we got the car back the dealer told us there were 2 major OTA updates that were due to be released a few days later. The paperwork from the dealer confirmed this and gave the codes for the updates. Bang on time the first update arrived. After 48 hours the second one arrived. In between the digital manual got updated twice and there were 2 minor updates. Lots of messages confirming successful updating as well. Car is relatively quiet now with no updates for the last 48 hours. As has been said the major updates took a long time to download and you are warned the car will be unusable while they install. VW claim the install takes 30 mins for each update and the vehicle must be turned off with parking brake on. Hope that helps. It is mentioned on other forums and some people have had emails from VW explaining it. It might be to do with voice control. Despite not buying this our car responds to " hey volkswagen" we can then issue voice commands. Its strange that you got the large OTA updates, considering that your car was already running version 1896 and presumably still is on version 1896! So, (as a software engineer myself), I suspect that this is yet another one of VW's software bugs... i.e. pushing large updates to cars that don't actually require those updates. It is probable that your large update essentially re-installed the same version that you already had running. Probably a side-effect of them transitioning from dealer-only updates to the new OTA approach.
AHG
I think that version 1896 is a pre-requisite for successful OTA installation of 1986 😉 jason1972 and Booth11
mike2727
What I do not get, is that the alarmsystem is still below par (class 3), and not qualified (in the Netherlands) for insurance, insurance wants car tracking ability (class 4 or 5), which VW does not offer. With all the online traffic going on, you would expect the class 4 to be included, and class 5 at an additional monthly/yearly fee
AHG
Same here. They request ghost-like systems to be installed (and with a hideous keypad, errr).

Yes plus +/- 800 euro for box incl install and monthly fees of +/- 20 euro, for a 50k+ car which is in the top of stolen cars you would expect it to be included
Aid7072
My car was in for its first service a couple of weeks ago and when asked if I had any issues I mentioned the numerous issues like double speaker pop, various weekly errors on the dash and reversing camera issues. Dealer said there were a few updates required and they would carry them out,3 weeks on I have had no issues at all and still showing version 1804 so not sure what they did but it certainly seems to have worked. Car is now asking for the large OTA update to be installed which can't fix issues I currently don't have.
Jhn220
Has anyone lost their dark mode for the screen following these updates? I have some horrible hybrid. I also can’t find the option now and am beginning to wonder if I imagined the car ever having it?

I’m on 1896 (dealer applied back in March) and haven’t had any of the big OTA updates (as yet) but still have the choice of Dark or Bright mode (accessed if you tap on the little man next to the globe in the same screen as the shortcuts. Have you had the big OTA updates on your car?
aldfort
If you read the email @JoeGTI7 posted then I think it provides some clarity. The size of the OTA update is such that I suspect a phased rollout is likely, much like MS do, I never get " patch tuesday" updates until the Thursday or Friday. Scudgie
Mine did an update yesterday and now shows software version A986. Does this mean that the expected second large OTA (restoring voice control etc) will result in it then becoming 1896? I was on 1804 previously. According to those that have had both OTA updates, yes, the second one gives you the complete 1896 software and restores voice control. See @JoeGTI7 various posts on it in this thread. egg
Not got my car yet, but I won’t be paying for the data services from VW so to get these OTA updates can the car simply be connected to a WiFi hotspot? Or if close enough to the house simply connect it to my home WiFi to download when parked up?
JoeGTI7
Just now, egg said: Not got my car yet, but o won’t be paying for the data services from VW so to get these OTA updates can the car simply be connected to a WiFi hotspot? Or if close enough to the house simply connect it to my home WiFi to download when parked up? no, you don’t need any WiFi. Nor do you need to pay for a data package. The data package is only required for extras like online radio, music streaming etc. OTA updates are also downloaded via the E-sim but it’s included in the WeConnect package. You do need to have the car parked in a good mobile coverage area. aldfort, egg, Booth11 and 1 other
