New Car Order - Black or Silver Pretorias?

I have black prets on my 7.5. I like the look of them but they have divided opinion amongst friends and colleagues. I chose them as I had silver prets on my 7 which I then had done in “shadow Silver”.

I have carefully washed the new car 3-4 times now and the wheels are marked already. Hairline scratches when looked at closely really show up on black vs silver. However, when clean and shiny they look the nuts.

I went into to it thinking for £400 I could have them painted whatever colour I wanted. Shadow silver look different in different light which i love....I think they’ll be painted shadow again at some point.

Here are some pics of all colours.

Looks great with both types.  but the gloss black rims on the FLR, along with the gloss black stuff on the front end, blends very well.    They do show marks more than silver, just as black paint does over silver - but not as much as the gloss black trim is prone to marking during washing.   It's like butter compared to rims...

Black Pretorias are the worst for dirt, after a decent drive they'll look like this until you wash them again.

Doesn't matter how hard you try, they'll always get swirls and marring because of the brake dust

But the OEM silver Pretorias hide the dirt a bit better

I think @TLining has got it right with the colour of his. So when I next need tyres I'm having my wheels done like this:

I am a big fan of black, and usually love the 'storm trooper' look. With the Mirrors / Wheels / accents in black on a White/Red/Grey car.

But the Prets I dont think suit black that well. They are such a stunning looking wheel, and you loose so much of the detail when its black.

I thought I wanted to do the strom trooper thing next. (On a 7.5 Estate), but this thread has pushed me the other way!

Think the Silver mirrors / Silver wheels actually works very well. While the black Prets really dont look great to me. Hide too much of the detailing.

I think a more plain wheel design works better in black.

As you know George I have the Black on mine which when trying to sell will be convincing people there the best 😂 but if I'm honest when standing back and looking at the Car think I should have gone with Silver may get the Calipers done in Red which might improve the look but as selling in June will probably just save my Money

This is a matter of personal preference - there's no "right" answer.  I almost always prefer silver wheels to black, including Prets, but to each his/her own.  Go with what looks better to you.  In case you can't decide, you can always consider black on one side, silver on the other.😀

If I was ordering today I’d be sorely tempted to go with black - I think they look great with the lighter colours and indium grey.

But I’d have reservations like others re how crap they’ll look when dirty. Also kerb marks / scratches will stand out much more but on the flip side I’d imagine much easier to refurb or touch up. A lot of people have had trouble getting the “right” grey shade for refurbs. The black wheels are just gloss black. Can’t go far wrong there...

Thanks for all the suggestions and photos guys. I had noticed that the standard VW colour for Pretorias was a darker silver and I have always liked it, but I also liked the "meaner" look of the dark prets.

Anyway, I've been convinced. Silver mirrors and silver prets :afro:

I'd choose silver over black for wheels every time, mainly because the silvers will stay looking cleaner for longer. My old ST had black wheels and they only ever looked clean right after they were washed. As soon as you drove anywhere the black wheels show up any dust and if the discs rusted after you washed the car then as soon as you used the brakes the wheels would have rust dust all over them.

The black wheels also show up any marks or scratches so much more than silver will. After a few years of washing my ST wheels with a Meguiars wheel brush the actual paint finish looked awful when they were clean and the sun caught them.
