Sorry to resurrect this thread. MRC for me, took my 7.5 DSG there back in April for their Stage1 ECU and TCU remap. dyno numbers came out 395hp/547nm. very impressed. Drove about 100 miles each way. Not launched car yet so cannot provide any 0-60 times.

Very impressive figures. Do you mind me asking what the cost of both remaps was and how was your fuel economy affected?

Sure, was about £1,700 ish, but that also included the supply and fit of the R600 intake, TT hose (which has an integrated larger elbow, so no need for a separate turbo elbow), Racingline muffler delete, and a new set of APR coil packs.

see this thread for dyno graph and pics

Sorry, Forgot the fuel question.

No issues with fuel consumption since the remap, if anything they've improved. On the drive to Mallory Park later on that month, i was in eco mode and managed to capture 40.5mpg over about 120 miles. Filled up at a Shell 10 mins away from the track. Happy to say that figure was then ruined by the trackday. Did about 80 laps and used another half a tank. Economy dropped to about 18mpg

When I pulled up at home, economy had jumped to about 28mpg.

And last weekend I did a round trip of about 150 miles, 20 miles of that pretty much WOT. Used a little over 3/8ths of a tank.

The R is equally capable of getting very close to, if not more than the factory figures as it is with getting the very low numbers when having fun.

Very good figures from MRC. Similar or on par to APR 2 stage figures. What are their stage 2 figures I wonder?

Anyone with a stage 2 APR tune care to say what their figures are?

Doug at MRC said that if I were to move to their stage 2 map, I'd probably only see up to about 420hp/430lb torque at best. I'd need to upgrade the intercooler and downpipe to do so, but there isn't really much more you can get out of the stock IS38. I think rather than push the turbo extremely close to its absolute limit, it is best to stay at what I think is more like a Stage 1+ level. In my mind I consider Stage 1 to be just the remap with stock hardware only. If you throw uprated intake mods or any other hardware to support the remap, then it's Stage1+. Or am I wrong?

I'm quite happy with the power/torque as it is at present, although I'll never say never for the future. Best I concentrate on handling and additional cooling upgrades first.

Those are certainly good stage 1 figures. It’s good to see how much extra a good custom tuner gets from good additional hardware.

I also see that the 7.5R makes more power/torque looking at IE numbers and racingline. Whether it’s the 7sp trans or later revision turbo/combination.

The IE stage 2 numbers super high 432hp 467lbs and seem to get lots of good reviews on forums. I think it’s 25hp/30lbs more torque than 7R.

One thing I haven’t seen though is 1/4 mile and Vbox times faster than others. I know MRC, APR, unicorn all Seem to have plenty of owners posting 1/4 mile, 0-60 etc

432hp/467lb for stage 2 is high and would represent another large ish jump in performance, especially the torque figure. To go from stock 295lb > stage 1 404lb is a huge uplift on its own, let alone to go on to 467lb. I'm curious whether that amount of torque exposes the vehicle to excessive risk in terms of something breaking? I'm under the impression that the IS38 is only capable of up to about 1.9bar of boost and at that level it will run out of puff quickly.

If the 7.5 (pre GPF) can get 25hp/30lbs more than a 7 going stage 2, then I wonder what extra gains the mk8 might get over the 7.5. The introduction of the GPF seemed to set them back quite a bit.

MRC maybe great at Mapping, just don’t get them to do any mechanical work.

Well that's disappointing to see. Is this something you came across immediately after having work done or some time after?

Is that first pic of a new turbo? Surely it would never run properly in that state?

Have you raised these problems with MRC directly?

A friend of mine.

They fitted a turbo inlet elbow and didn’t tighten up the top bolt
Then when he went to rectify it he found the cam solenoid connector in that damaged condition.
He traveled a long way so couldn’t just ‘nip back’ in any case they denied their mechanic left it like that.
Not the first bad report about the practical side of their work either.

  • 6 months later...

Just want to give my experience with MRC today (15/01/2022) tuning my 2015 Golf R DSG on 65k miles.

I had a stage 1 ECU/DSG tune

R600 intake

Turbo technics intake pipe

Ive been researching for a while which company to go to that will give me the most power for my car as possible yet sufficiently. I contacted all the main companies such as Racingline, APR, Revo etc who all said I should see figures between 360ps - 370ps and 345lbft - 375lbft. MRC replied with the same ps figures however their torque figures quoted were between 368lbft - 390lbft. This had my attention and I decided to go ahead with MRC. How glad am I that I made that decision, after the work was done my car is now running 390ps!!!!! with 400lbft!!!!! On Stage 1 tune!!! Doug down at MRC is a genius when it comes to this, his knowledge and insight is inch perfect and Sarah at the front desk is a major help with handling queries. Whoever is in the market for any form of tuning I urge you to contact MRC, they’re the best at it.

Michael,

Very good figures, you will have a lot of fun with all that extra grunt, but in all honesty, it's going to be too fast for the road, so I recommend you exploit it on track instead. I'm sure Doug mentioned it to you, but just make sure you do more frequent oil changes, and it goes without saying to always use 99RON fuel from now on.

I'm curious to know how you find it, especially the DSG behaviour after you've played about with it for a bit.

I've still not launched mine yet, so I'm still wanting to know what it would do 0-60 in. If you have done so since and have timed it properly, do tell.

Enjoy.

Thanks for your message.

In all honesty I’m not fascinated with the track thing, I was just seeking more power than the stock power I’ve become used to after 2 years of owning it. Yes Doug did mention doing the oil and filter change every 6k miles from now on. Also using 99Ron is something I’ve been doing with every car I’ve owned for years purely because it’s literally right in front of my house so when Doug mentioned it to me it was perfect, so thanks for the heads up.

Regarding the DSG I’ve noticed that if you use the paddles it’s really manual, no auto upshifts and it will bounce of the rev limiter if you let it. The gear changes are noticeably much quicker and downshifts are sharper and  it holds the gears for longer instead of reaching 6th gear after 30 seconds lol (joke). Most importantly though, it handles the torque the car now produces through the gears. I asked Doug what’s the importance of the DSG tune because it’s not mandatory and he stated they recommend it because just like my case, healthy cars can exceed the figures quoted and without the DSG tune the clutch will slip.

I’ll launch it some time tomorrow and give you an update ok.

Thanks

It’s all Dyno Lottery Re figures.

My APR Stage 1 car was measured at Awesome and gave 380/390lbs.
Stage 2 it gave 400/ 420lbs.

On another Dyno it may measure differently but it’s all about the delivery and drive.

Ive never seen a IS38 give such high figures as those quoted by MRC tbh. Did Doug say they were unusually high??

Those figures are more likely reserved for lower output hybrid outputs
