Hi guys,

Been looking around different tuners and MRC Tuning has caught my eyes as I’ve heard a lot of good reviews.

I’ve got 67 plate Golf R MK7.5 and looking to go stage 1. Has anyone recently got their car tuned there and what was the price if you don’t mind me asking?

How does it drive now compared to stock?

Appreciate those who reply in advance.

Take care VW gang!

When I bought my Mk7 R, I wanted to take it straight to stage 2, as it wasn't particularly quick as standard.  It was between MRC and APR in the end.  I went with APR as there was a 25% offer on (which basically matched MRC prices) - that was about £1100 for engine and dsg stage 2 maps together.  It woud have been a distance for me to travel to MRC and there is an APR dealer close by.

I'm highly impressed with APR and would definitely use them again.  Alternatively, if I lived close to MRC, I would use them without hesitation - based on what other Mk7 R owners have fed back to me.

Hope this helps a bit.

I would also consider unicorn developments . Had a stage 1 off them 2 years ago as always felt underwhelmed with the standard golf r performance . Stage 1 unicorn changed all of that and car ran faultless for over 2 years . That’s exactly why car went back to Rick for my stage 2+/3 custom tune recently .  :) 💨💨💨

How much would a stage 2 be at unicorn?

You would be looking at around £850 for engine and tcu Dsg remap from what I can remember , which is well worth it , in my honest opinion.

Must have gone up in price then? Unless the parts description wasn’t included when you got yours done?

I’ve never heard unicorn developments so will check them out and see how much they quote me. Rick? Does he work at unicorn developments?

Damn! You got it for a good price then with 25% discount! No idea when they’ll have a discount sale. I doubt any time soon!

Hi, i had Revo on my fiesta. Revo are one of the biggest names in tuning, esp on ford/vag scene. Only issue for me personally....is that most the revo dealers round me are just flash on, no dyno avail. I was preferring for a map to be done/on dyno same time. Yes i could travel to get it put on a dyno elsewhere, but rather it all under one roof. That's the only thing putting me off.

Also, is DSG tune really needed for stage 1?

Not mandatory for a DQ381 (7 sped) DSG, but a good TCU tune does make the car much nicer to drive in D (if you always drive in Manual mode not so much an advantage unless you use LC a bit)

So I've just come back from MRC Banbury, after having the full intake hardware fit treatment, including muffler delete, along with their Custom Stage 1 ECU and TCU remap.
I can safely say I'm so impressed with the results.

      After intake stuff fitted

Car sitting waiting to go on the Dyno, it was a fantastic day weather wise. Clear blue skies and sunny, but cold. Good for intake temps.

      Dyno Results
Power wise, from stock run with intake hardware fitted, it made 323ps.
After the 2nd dyno run following the remap, it made 395ps.

Torque, from stock, it made 413.89Nm (305.27lb ft)
After the 2nd dyno run following the remap it made 547.63Nm (403.91lb ft)

One the brakes side of things, I decided to assess the direct OEM replacement hooked discs all round, along with braided lines from HEL. Pads, I've gone with Ferodo DS3.12 for the front, and Ferodo DS2500 for the rears.
      Front

      Rear

I purchased this totally stock car back in Dec 2020, and although it was quick, I always felt it was holding back a lot. An example of this is that I could be on a dual carriageway doing 50mph for instance and floor it, and it would pick up speed ok (relatively speaking) but there didn't seem to be any urgency to it. I always got the impression it was constantly restricting the boost and fuel, deliberately limiting power, just to maintain its factory output figures. In stock form, most of its speed seems to be concentrated in bursts from standstill up to about 60mph.
I had some time to test the results on my 100 mile drive back home!

Now, its completely different. Everything about it is urgent. From standstill, not using launch control, it really punches in the power, and the DSG shifts are now more aggressive and quicker. I now get the sense of being pushed back in the seat while accelerating in every gear. The power delivery doesn't stop either, it just keeps going until it hits the rev limiter and then upshifts.  If I put it in manual mode, it is just that, and it wont upshift until I change and will bounce off the rev limiter.
And then there is the noise. I can hear much more of the intake noises. Makes a massive difference. Oh and it pops and bangs a lot more in race mode!

I don't have a draggy, so I can't test its 0-60 times, but I imagine its going to be less than 4 seconds.

Looking forward to Mallory Park on Thursday.

What does everyone think? Any questions, let me know.
As always, let me know of any further recommendations.

I had an order come across my desk today for a order of Land Rover parts off to MRC Tuning in Banbury.

Just thought I'd share, the world seems very small.

      Hi all,

I have recently purchased a Remus backbox to fit to my MK7 golf R. I purchased it from the Facebook golf owners group as an exhaust that would fit on my 64 plate R. I sent it to a garage to get fitted and they have told me that it will not fit onto my car as the place where they would cut the original exhaust would not fit in the Remus backbox and even if it did it wouldn’t work due to the original have flat spots? Here is the pictures of the exhaust below. Would anyone be able to help? Have I brought the wrong exhaust for my car? Or do I need the full system for it to fit?

      Thanks.

Hi, Im looking to remap my R 7.5 to stage 1. The car has a few mods including a chameleon grey wrap but its time for more power. What is the best stage 1 map out there for the price? I don't mind buying an air intake or downpipes etc. as long as the I can feel a decent upgrade in power/torque.

      Hello all,

I am stage 1 ECU/TCU tuned with R-Tech and the gearbox is acting a little strange when I hit the loud pedal. Sometimes when I boot it in 1st, it climbs through the rev range and wants to hesitate when changing into second gear and holds back for a split second, then changes gear and off it goes through the rev range like nothings wrong. Its also done this a couple of times going from 2nd to 3rd. This is usually done in Race mode and gearbox in S. Both manual and auto mode.

Any one come across this type of thing before?

Also when plodding around car parks or town, when i'm at around 2-10mph it likes to increase up on the revs all on its own when coasting. Only very marginal but it likes to 'hang on' (best way to describe it). Quite a difficult one to explain, but if you've encountered the same thing, you'll know exactly what im on about.

      All advice welcome, Cheers.
