Hi folks, I've dreamed of owning a Golf R for over a decade, I'm sure you can relate to how happy I was the day I got my 2018 MK7.5! While the car is nearly perfect, there is one glaring and concerning mechanical issue which is affecting many owners. The issue is a hard 2-3 shift when the car is in fully manual mode (lever knocked to right in North America, left in UK) shifting between 3-5K RPMs with 20%+ throttle applied. The shift is so hard you can feel a good knock in the gas pedal and sometimes it gets so bad you can hear a bang noise! I have searched the internet for 6 months about this issue and I've read at least 20 other accounts from other owners with the same exact issue. This being said, I'd like to collect more data on this issue as remedying this problem would literaly make this the car I dreamed of! I'm asking owners of MK7.5 DGS, especially model year 2019, to please try and reproduce the issue being careful to follow these steps: Enter Normal driving mode Put car in full manual mode Change to 2nd gear Accelerate to 3.5K rpm using 30% throttle As you pass 3.5K rpm, shift up to 3rd gear Report: did you feel the bang in the pedal or even hear it? If this gets traction, and we do this in a controlled manner, I will at least have data to share with VAG on this. If I get good data, I intend to do just this and I have a few clever tricks that might help us get noticed at the top... PS: I am campaigning for us and as such you may see this post copied and pasted on all VW forums, it's my attempt to reach the biggest audience possible. Please help a brother out TL;DR - Please perform steps 1-6 above and report back if you have a 2018/19 R w/ DSG

It’s been a mission searching for my unicorn in the current (lockdown#3) environment, and decided to drop expectations rather than up my original budget as COVID tax seems to be hitting R prices hard. That said, I’m chuffed to bits and really can’t complain with the beast I’ve ended up with 😬 Out of Lapiz and Indium, the blue seemed to show chips way worse, and also appeared to struggle for depth. Indi has masses of depth and reminds me of my old anthracite Mk4 which was my gateway car for detailing and modding 😍 There also appears to be scene tax applied to Lapiz, so was happy to go for the slightly stealthier grey. It’s been a couple of weeks now and have managed to give it a decent decontamination and single pass with a green hex pad and some 2400 menzerna, then a coat of good old collinite 476s to give it a bit of protection until I get a chance to do a bit more of a thorough seeing to. The exhausts hadn’t been cleaned before. Ever. In fact I’m fairly certain the single previous owner actively sought out soot to ingrain into the chrome tips. It’s had scotchbrite/autosol/pink stuff/mother’s so far and the tips are all showing some shine again, but far from finished 😂 Alcantara seats and interior plastics came up nicely without anything industrial being required, so just brushes, vacuum, damp microfibres and some AG shampoo and various interior detailers. Main gripe I have is a collapsed drivers bolster, which is down to the frame. Will maybe just swap out the lower foam and refit, but longer term will hopefully be swapped out anyway. I have a hankering to retrim some S3 sportbacks (? The ones that look like an angry, quilted cobra?) maybe.... Performance wise I’m chuffed as it is, and until we can drive for fun again and I get used to the power on tap, it’ll probably remain as is. Will likely get an open cone, pipe and elbow for noise at some point tho. The wheels are tiny and too tucked, but ideal for winters and have decent tread on Contis so will maybe space them for the next few months before replacing wheels and tyres for 19s and PS4s. Spacers on the rear look like I could do 20mm, so bolt on, but front will probably need <15mm so bolt through may be my only option. Not sure how I feel about extended bolts on drive axle, but may just need to get over myself and accept I’m not an engineer/mathematician. Please feel free to correct my flat-earth fears here 🤣 We live on a new estate and roads haven’t been finished yet, so need to see what levels I have onto my drive before assessing lowering options, as well as whatever wheels it ends up on. Not in a rush though, as sits quite respectably imho. I’ve already deleted the airbag stickers with ezmods replacements as that is a massive bugbear. Have fitted extended ally flappy paddles, and have some dynamic wing mirror indicators to go on once it dries up a bit out there. Also have blue footwell leds on hand, and have looms for the rears on order so will bang all that in once everything has arrived and then relocate a front one to the boot. I’ve used OBDeleven for a few years on my other cars, so have fiddled and made some changes; killed the soundaktor, scandi DRLs and three second delay for washer jets. Will probably do more as I get further into the forum and find more inspiration. Have to say, it’s brilliant to find such an active forum for the R. Many seem to have died off in favour of FB now, and that just doesn’t serve the same purpose in my eyes. Good work, mods 💪🏼 Doing this on an evil iPad is painful, but maybe I attached pics, maybe I didn’t. Life is unpredictable like that

Had the mountune M52 tune on my 2017 Mk7 R now for a couple of weeks, and I should have done it ages ago what a difference.. The only thing that’s taking a bit of getting used to is the DSG stage 1 map, I’m finding that in town driving it’s going between 3rd and 4th a bit too much although you can go into manual to get around that. I have noticed though that if the DSG is put into Eco it seems to stop the hunting between 3rd and 4th, probably a daft question but in doing this I’m wondering does it knock the performance back down to the standard 300ps or does it stay at 360ps and just dull the gearbox a bit.?

Hey guys, First of all, I'm new to the forum so apologies if I'm posting in the wrong section or making a topic I shouldn't be. I'm currently looking at getting a used mk7 Golf R and I've found one I'm looking to make an offer on (likely in next week or so) but wanted a little guidance if possible. I've looked through all the subsections of this forum and I've read through the used buying guide I found (https://www.vwroc.com/forums/topic/25237-used-mk7-r-buying-guide/) but I'm posting this topic as a I have a specific question I needed help with. The car I'm looking at is a 2015 model, around 50k miles on the clock - it's a DSG version which from my research is a sturdy and generally unproblematic transmission but my concern is that the service history on the car doesn't take note of any Haldex or DSG servicing, which I thought it should have had by now at 40k and especially as it's 5 years old. I spoke to the main dealer who did two services on the car and they confirmed the transmission & Haldex service didn't take place - one additional service took place at an independent garage but I can't contact them to determine exactly what they did, I suspect they are currently closed due to covid. To my knowledge, the onboard computer tells you oil change and service intervals without going into specifics so I don't think that will answer my question either. My question - is this a car to walk away from? VW have confirmed to me they will do a fixed-price service should I choose to buy it but I'm worried it might be a case of a transmission giving up if it's not been looked after and serviced, especially given the apparent cost of replacing DSG. I will likely take out a 1 year warranty at a minimum if going for the car. You may well tell me it's not really an issue, I wanted some advice basically as this will be my first (potential) DSG purchase. Thanks in advance and hope you're all well and safe.

I bought a used car with an automatic transmission (DSG) a few days ago. It has 245k km on it. Today while driving I realized that DSG seems to be slipping when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. It revs a bit higher before shifting. It revs like 100-300rpm higher and then shifts. I also hear it from the engine when it revs higher. I tested the DSG in M mode and it shifts perfectly without revving Higher than expected. What could possibly be cousing this? Here is a video while it does it: https://imgur.com/gallery/gB1fPcn

Hello all, I am stage 1 ECU/TCU tuned with R-Tech and the gearbox is acting a little strange when I hit the loud pedal. Sometimes when I boot it in 1st, it climbs through the rev range and wants to hesitate when changing into second gear and holds back for a split second, then changes gear and off it goes through the rev range like nothings wrong. Its also done this a couple of times going from 2nd to 3rd. This is usually done in Race mode and gearbox in S. Both manual and auto mode. Any one come across this type of thing before? Also when plodding around car parks or town, when i'm at around 2-10mph it likes to increase up on the revs all on its own when coasting. Only very marginal but it likes to 'hang on' (best way to describe it). Quite a difficult one to explain, but if you've encountered the same thing, you'll know exactly what im on about. All advice welcome, Cheers.

Afternoon, 67 plate DSG R is short shifting in manual from 3rd to 4th at around 4,500 rpm intermittently. Master tech at local VW dealer took car out, experienced the fault and immediately said it was an issue / error and that diagnostics would have to be plugged in during one of these short shifts and the data 'sent off' to VW for them to advise. Fast forward 2 weeks, the car is in, master tech is on holiday, another technician is handling the car. After 3 days I call and they say VW have said: 1: It is a normal traction control feature. 2: The technician didn't send off any data that included a short shift, just general gearbox diagnostics data during a normal run. I now seem like the bad guy with the local dealer for suggesting the technician hasn't done what the master technician asked to be done and 2, I am being told that a short shift in manual is a perfectly normal safety feature? Advice on both would be appreciated. If I am wrong I am wrong, just want to know. Cheers.

Hi everyone, I'm having an issue and it's not doing my blood pressure any good! I've got a mk7 R on 51k miles. It's been tuned by MRC, stage 1 high torque. The gearbox has an issue. In drive (not sport/race or manual) the gears are rough. On the upshifts, they're smooth if gentle acceleration however if i try to accelerate hard the gears slam into gear. On the downshifts, it's uncomfortable, i feel every gear change. It's worse in the lower gears but is there with all of them. If i'm in race or manual mode, generally i don't feel any issues, but i do feel it occasionally. I took it back to MRC, hoping it was the gearbox TCU, however they put the car back to standard and it's still doing it, which means there's an underlying issue. Doug at MRC spent a long time doing the gearbox adaptations which hasn't made it any better. I asked Doug why it would be mainly fine in manual or sport and he's said there's more revs, more power going through etc with more clamping pressure etc... I have to say, i'm impressed by Doug and his team, all looks very professional. They're saying it's going to be either the clutch packs needs replacing or the mechatronics unit. However, i'm 22, and spent years saving for my R, as it was my dream, so i haven't the money to start replacing everything in the hope it fixes it. I'm absolutely gutted at this point, genuinely. MRC, and myself, are leading more towards the clutch pack needing replacement, but i'm wondering if any of you could guide me in the right direction? I'd really appreciate any advice.

Good evening all, Firstly, I’ve finally decided to bite the bullet and buy myself a Mk7 Golf R after 4/5 months of searching. The car is a 65 plate with 30000 miles in Limestone Grey with every optional extra except ‘Lane Assist’. The reason for the thread is that during a test drive I noticed a clunk coming from the brake pedal when I released my foot. It seemed occasional although it was very easy to reproduce. I’m slightly concerned with this although the salesman told me it’s normal and happens on them all. Any advice on this issue would be greatly appreciated; is this normal and am I being paranoid or is there something underlying that needs addressing? I have tried searching but found nothing similar to my issue. Many thanks in advance! Callam

Hi. It's super hard to find any real life comparisons between dsg6 and dsg7 (i suppose thats dq380). Just ordered and gti 7.5 with a dsg6. But now considering going performance pack that comes with dsg7. I'm now on dsg7 dry (dq200) it's sucks..so slow to react and kind of boring, probably thats why i Test drove a new mk7.5 with a dsg6 (dealer didn't have dsg7 in stock). Are here any ppl that had dsg6 and now moved to new dsg7? Is it any better in terms of from still to full throttle latency, shifting faster, any ways better? Sorry if this place is a wrong place to post. I think its a same box that is in new R and also comes with 1.5 evo engines. Greetings from Finland!

Hi All, Im really hoping someone can help. Yesterday i bought a 2010 VW GOLF R MK 6 AUTO DSG. When going for a test drive and inspecting the car it all seemed fine. My first issue came when i dropped my friend off that came with me. As i was leaving his driveway, i went to put it in reverse and at that point it gave me an error with an exclamation mark saying gearbox was overheated. I turned the car off and then started it again and seemed fine. I reversed out and went home. At some stage i got a solid engine light appear on my dash. Today, i dropped my mum off somewhere and when putting it in reverse, it wouldnt select the gear and let me reverse, nor would it let me select drive either. I restarted the car and that seemed to then let me reverse and select my gears. At this point the engine light was still showing. I took the car to my mechanic to do a check of the car as i just got it and to show this issue i was having. As i was driving to my mechanic, about 15 hours after the initial light appeared, the light went away by itself. He ran the OBD scans throughout the whole car and only found one code - "P2711 - Unexpected / Implausible Mechanical Gear Disengagement", which was cleared because he checked the DSG and it seemed fine as the drive is smooth and the oil was good. We also discovered it could be from aggressive driving which i dont believe i was doing as i have been taking it easy. When i got home, i went to the gym awhile later, as i was trying to reverse out of my driveway, the same issue occurred where it wouldnt select reverse or any other gear so i had to restart the car to get it to select reverse and the light is appearing again. Im really not sure what is happening at this point and starting to think this may be a gearbox issue after all. Is anyone able to shed some light on this? Kindest Regards, Liborio - Sydney

Hi all, just picked up my MK7 facelift R and I’m loving it so far! At the stage now where I’m just seeing what happens in different modes and I noticed that when in Eco all the gears show with an E infront of the gear numbers. However I’ve noticed if you leave the car in Eco and turn off the engine then turn the engine back on again the gears now show with a D infront of them even though the car is still in Eco when you go into modes? To get E to show again I have to press the mode button until it gets back to Eco. Forgive me if I’m being stupid but is this normal and if so can anybody explain why this happens? Thanks

Does anyone have a Res delete fitted on a Mk7.5 DSG. I was wondering if drone was an issue with the new 7 speed box. I know the BSC res delete will stop any drone but when they are nearly 3x the price of a standard delete, if the 7 speed fixes this I know what I will be choosing! Many thanks!!

Afternoon everyone, As the title says my car is coming up to 3 years old and 30,000 miles. Having read a few threads so far I'm led to believe at this mileage I should be getting a standard service done on the car but also get both the DSG and Haldex fluid changed at the same time, does that sound about right? I'm also based in the Newcastle area and am looking for garage recommendations. I've seen a few for Revolution, Swift and Automotive Solutions in Peterlee. Are these still the best in the area? At my last service the quote from Swift came in at the same price as Lookers @ Silverlink so I'm not sure if they are going to be competitive enough for an independent specialist. Peterlee is a little trek down the road but if they are decent it'll be worth the trip. As for Revolution I know they've been around a while but I don't know what their pricing is like..... Any help / info appreciated.

A couple of times recently when I've (almost) floored the accelerator with DSG in Sport mode, the car (exhaust I think) made a strange low frequency sound for a second before it changed down and accelerated Is this normal? I think the DSG box is confused as it was accelerating hard and then slowing down before accelerating hard again which I can understand but I'm not sure about the noise. More of a DSG burp than DSG fart.

Few photos of my R ..haven’t done anything to it since I picked it up last year in May..1 owner and full history just done 13k miles..normally with me cars only last about 6 months and I get bored and change (57 and counting) but for some reason I’m keen on hanging onto it for a while...just not getting bored, normally I’d start modding straight away but I’ve had a lot on in the past year and just haven’t had the time to do it.. thats going to change.. first thing was was to wake up the turbo noise... intake time.. I went for the open Integrated Engineering set up from the lovely guys at Regal 👍 yep I know it won’t make anymore power but it sounds nice and I love the re-circ noise you get when you come off throttle 😁 Next will be a set of wheels I’m currently waiting for delivery on .. I spotted a white R on google images with these on only to find out it was a member of the R32 owners club that I’d met a few years ago at a meet at Bruntingthorpe..I’ve gone for 19” Gmp Italia Atoms. Hi Stefan88👍 Next up up will be springs (probably Eibach as the roads round here are shocking) ..then res delete and probably a JB4.. then some bodywork stuff..don’t think I’ll go Maxton will probably look at Triplercomposites well that’s the story so far.. look forward to getting your options and useful knowledge 👍

Hi, Looking at potentially getting into an RS3 and toying with the idea of selling my Golf. The car is a 2015 plate with 16k miles. It does not have any optional extras other than factory equipment. I have just replaced the two front tyres with Goodyear Eagle F1s, waiting to get stock for the rear. Was serviced when I bought it around 6 months ago and service book stamped. Car is completely stock, unmodified and hasn't been remapped (no JB1 or JB4 or DTUK). £20,000 open to offers although I challenge you to find one with similar miles and DSG for the price. Edit: OFFERS OVER £18,750 CONSIDERED (TRADE IN PRICE - GOING TO TRADE END OF WEEK)£18,750

Hi guys, quick question, this is my first DSG car and noticed when ever the car is coming to a stop it revs a little high between 1000 to 2000 before idling? is this normal as iv'e never experienced this with any autos i have had many thanks!

As title, Had my 7.5r estate 3 weeks now and at 2000 miles I thought I would treat it to its first launch. Pulled amazingly off the line and then when changing into second there was a nasty thud... it did just carry on doing its thing and when going into third it wasn't as smooth as I predicted... Carried on about my business and had a little hoon dropping through gears etc and everything seems fine. I tried launch again and it was perfect and smooth throughout gears... Not sure wether to be worried as such..? could it have been to do with surface?? (even though it was just normal dry tarmac ) Was hoping to get it tuned in future but think I may have to avoid that now in case something is a miss.
