Alright let’s stick to posting up as per the thread title, and that’s all. Any further personal insults from anyone and it’ll be another thread locked, and appropriate action taken.2 points

I run both my Golfs on summer / winter tyres to ensure that maximum grip is available all the time. It’s less about speed and more about minimising braking distance, as my family’s safety is paramount. I live in Kent and we usually have fairly mild winters. However, winter tyres are designed to work in the lower temperatures (10 degrees C or less IIRC) which is what we generally drop down to from December through to March. Along with those cold damp days, it makes a lot of sense when travelling along country lanes which never see a gritter. Water management on the winter tyres is so much better also. The tyres cut through standing water without any issues whereas you can feel the summer tyres being pushed up when the tyres momentarily aqua plain whilst driving through standing water. As much as we try and avoid standing water, it’s not always possible. Another plus is that fact all the wheels get a full deep clean and refresh of protection every six months or so whilst off the vehicles.2 points

What did you do to your R today?
Booth11 and one other reacted to gregozedobe for a topic
You are right. After reading all those negative reviews I will be checking both the calibration of the LEDs (ie at what voltage they change from green to amber, and also for amber to red) especially carefully to see how useful they are, and also how much current they draw when connected to a battery when the car is not being used. Hopefully they have upgraded the voltage thresholds to be more useful since those older negative reviews were written. I will report back in great detail (that's exactly what you all expect from me, right ? ) when I get my hands on them. I'm getting two, so that might show any variability in results as well. Edit 1: According to CTEK their LEDs use only 1.5mA (1.4Ah per month) which is low enough to leave it connected all the time as long as you check regularly and charge up as needed. Edit 2: Just got told that the seller doesn't actually have any stocks, so I don't know when (or if ! ) I'll be getting these comfort indicators to test out. I hate it when sellers claim to have stuff in stock, but after you have ordered and paid they suddenly "discover" they don't have any. And somehow they never offer to cancel the order and immediately refund, either Edit3: I did eventually get a refund, and have ordered a couple more (from Amazon UK), so one day I'll get to try them out....2 points -
18'' Prets on R Estate
roj1801 and one other reacted to Chainsawbob for a topic
I went from 18” to 19” Cadiz from CMWheels; the size of the rims can be seen below in the pictures. I have had no issues with the rims. Don’t forget to ask Liam at CMWheels for a cheeky forum discount! Note: my OEM centre caps fitted with no issues. The increase in insurance is negligible.. I am a good boy in declaring mods!! Forgive the dirty R in the pictures.. not had the time recently to throw a bucket over it!!! Also added a picture of 19” Michelin Pilot Sport 4s for reference - I am no Lewis Hamilton, but I think they are a massive improvement over the Potenza Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points -
Res delete
marshy and one other reacted to gregozedobe for a topic
VW could argue that the removal of the resonator makes the exhaust system more free flowing which could increase power which invalidates the warranty on the whole power train, it is then up to you to prove otherwise (that's how it works in real life, even if in theory it is up to them to prove it contributed to any damage).2 points -
So I have had the car 7 months now and have to say it’s the best car I have owned.I bought what I thought was a standard car but after driving it a few weeks I thought the exhaust sounded loud and droney. After seeing threads about res deletes I had a look under the car and found that this was the case.My intention before buying the car was to go for a Miltek system and this just speeded up the process. So just before Xmas I contacted Progressive Parts in Manchester about a resonated/valved cat back system which they fitted. Car now sounds so much better with the valves closed and with them open gives a lovely deep growl, also looks a lot better. So I got Xmas out the way and was on the lookout for new wheels.I had narrowed my choice down to 2.Racingline R360 in gunmetal or Revo RVO 19 in matte anthracite,I decided on the latter. These were purchased from Progressive Parts along with the racingline nut and stud kit and went on in March along with Michelin PS4s 235/35/19. I was surprised to find out the ride improved after going on to 19s,think it’s a combination of lighter wheels and better tyres.Car now looks a bit like a tractor with the arch gap and needed lowering desperately.Unfortunatley the small matter of a world wide pandemic put things on hold, although I was in contact with Awesome GTI about options and they recommended the KW 1’s to retain ride comfort as well as better handling. These were purchased mid May and were fitted end of May once the workshop opened. Car now handles, rides and looks a lot better now.Think the only thing I may add looks wise,is a subtle carbon front lip.Next on the list is power and to go stage 1 and as it’s a manual will need an uprated clutch. So it will be back to Awesome for the APR/Sachs package which should see me finished mods wise for a bit.1 point

Mk8 R. If Not, then What?
goodbadboy reacted to NRW for a topic
No lovely pics or links to great vids, sorry. I know we all reserve final judgement until we’ve seen it on Release Day, but there doesn’t seem to be alternatives that jump out to go to after an R. (Apart from A35, M135i, S3, Cupra Leon, other R’s..😂) Personally I suspect my next buy, not for a few years yet, will be an Estate/Wagon/Hearse/Combi. The Focus ST 2.3 Ecoboost Auto looks interesting with 280Ps - admittedly front drive only, but they seem to go quite well...or have I been gazing at my screen for too long??😂1 point -

The seals are a common culprit Marcus, I’ve had creaky door seals on every golf I’ve had and sounds like you’ve had it on other cars too. They get to a certain point and dry out, start creaking and just need lubricating. I’ve not had to do mine again since this thread but I expect they’ll need it sooner rather than later, as it’s been a good while now. Panel Wipe is fine (ime) to use on the rubber seals and the flock, to make sure they are free of any residue, dirt etc, and prep the seals for lubricating. I’ve never had any ill effects using it on either runner or flock seals. Alternatively you could use some shampoo solution knocked up, to clean them down prior to using the Gummi Pflege. Gummi Pflege will do the trick and is used by plenty, ime, it’s not as long lasting as Krytox, but the flip side is its considerably cheaper. The flock seals at the top are often more noisy than the rubber door seals so I’ve always done those, and again never any degradation caused by the lubricant oil. It’s important to wipe off any excess after application otherwise the does run. I hope it sorts the creaking for you.1 point

Will miss the heated screen, but gain a heated wheel 🙄. I can drop the back seats from inside the boot 🚴♂️ Wanted to go 6cyl before ICEs are banned and not ready for electric - I think H2 will be the way to go for longer distances. Driving in the winter/snow
NRW reacted to SillyOldHector for a topic
Living in N.E. Scotland and driving around the Cairngorms, I have a set of 18” winter wheels and tyres. When required they are indispensable and generally give more confidence from Nov to March, on wet, greasy, icy, snowy and generally poorer conditions. I will be selling them soon, as I’m moving on, car-wise, and bought similar for the new car.1 point -
Me, I want a small estate so when it comes to changing I'll look around and see what's what. Mid-size estates don't really float my boat, so the 3 Series, A4, C aren't really up there, though the C43 might. If there aren't any small estates, I'll miss out the mid size and go back for a big one and probably go back to a 5 Series. Quite like an Alpina!1 point

How very kind. Thank you. Can’t argue that I spend a lot of time on here.😂 and have always been impressed by how welcoming and well behaved forum members usually are. Thank you mate They are Auto Clover. £26.99 from eBay one of my best mods to date. I am a Jap boy at heart and have had wind deflectors on all my previous cars. These were one of the first things I did to the car. I wanted to avoid Heko because of the wing mirrors catching, and I heard bad things about Climair actually increasing wind noise as they sit in the rubber channel. These are "stick on" type with 3m tape and bond onto the actual door frame. Takes 5 mins to fit and don't interfere with windows going up as they are fitted outside. No issues with the rubber seals and no catching the mirrors. Oh and the rear deflector covers the whole window too! Bargain IMO, couple more pics1 point

What did you do to your R today?
NRW reacted to gregozedobe for a topic
I expect it will fit simply to my Octavia, but I vaguely remember reading something about captive nuts on the terminals of the R, and of course the -ve lead needs to be attached to the special terminal on the firewall, not directly to the battery. I will be checking what the actual battery voltage is compared with the red/yellow/green LEDs so know exactly what is going on with the LEDs. If I don't report back with some findings in a few weeks time feel free to give me a nudge to remind me.1 point -

MK7.5 TPMS High Retrofit
gregozedobe reacted to alexretro for a topic
Batteries are bonded inside so not replaceable mate. Manufacturer guide says they should last 6 years. So be careful if you buying used sensors. However on my last car I bought 6yo sensors already and they and they were fine when i sold the car 2 years later. Sensors are inactive when you not driving so i think it depends more to miles you making1 point -

Really depends on what you classify "best" as. If you want lightweight and strength then OZ Ultraleggeras are good. Motec Ultralight are another option. Team Dynamics are a mainstay of the motorsport world and their pro race 1.2 for 18" and under or 1.3 for 19" and above are very light for their size and very strong1 point -

Personally if it was a performance car I was in the market for I’d rather see a service history from a reputable specialist with supporting invoices any day over a generic main dealer. But as long as the service regime has been adhered to its full history.1 point

At stage 3, I'd seriously consider having the original tuner continue to look after the car given their knowledge of it. Romford-Croydon's not that much of a trek. Good luck in whichever route you take, sorry can't help with a local recommendation for you. J.1 point
